Waiting For Machine Group Policies - Shutdown Issue

I can't pinpoint when it started so I can't really rollback, it's been an issue that's been happening for some time now. I can't recall making any changes to the system.

Anyway, when I attempt to shut down, it would hang on "Waiting for machine group policies to finish" as I enabled verbose shutdown since it had been hanging during shutdown. As best I could tell, machine group policies were aimed at applying rules across a network, which is all well and good but if what I have setup is a network, this is the only computer or anything at all that's on it.

I had figured it was a random occurence but what i've managed to determine is that it only occurs on shorter usage sessions, like I guess under an hour. I can't give a better estimate as I would prefer not to sit here for hours attempting to shut off my PC at random intervals.

It won't hang after a long session, but I don't have a "medium" session. By long they're usually 4+ hours. When I have the computer on for that long, whether it's using it or having it on and idle, it won't hang on shutdown. But if it's a short session, it will hang without fail, regardless of what I did whether it's nothing or playing a game.

I can't say i've messed with the group policies as i'm not exactly sure what they are to start with. I know you could access them with gpedit.msc but the only things I changed there was years ago to do the standard things like disable Messenger.

This is XP Pro SP2.

you can first try disabling the verbose status messages by using gpedit.msc or regedit.exe tools - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325376

and then check out the Solution section on this page - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showpost...24&postcount=2

more info on Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP which also include the Boot logging - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
