Service Pack 2

With all of this talk about Vista, I just realized I never upgraded to XP Service Pack 2. Everything is working on my system with SP 1. Are there any compelling reasons why I should upgrade. Thanks for your help.

Well, I upgraded cause Windows Update no longer lets you download the latest security fixes unless you have SP2 installed, I believe.

Plus, some apps now require SP2 in order to run - I think just because MS wants to force everybody to SP2 so they only have to support one iteration of XP - maybe.

Anyway, I think if you do a full-on backup or ghost and then try SP2, you should be able to minimize the impact of something goes wrong. If it goes boom, you should be able to restore from the ghost image or backup and get back to a functional environment.

That's a good idea. I do a backup and then see what happens.

System Specs

If you need a cleanout, then slipstream your XP CD with SP2, and re-install, as it's said that SP2 works best as a slipstream, second best when applied "clean", and can be a bit iffy applied to a system with a motley collection of optional patches.

It **SHOULD** be able to apply over any combinations, but it's always possible that it may disagree with some pre-SP2 patch, If you have applied any patches from KB searching, getting hold of the post SP2 versions of them to apply after is probably a good idea, if they are not "fixed in SP2" issues.

Autostreamer makes a basic slipstream easy, even if you go no further than that, it saves considerable time if re-installation is needed.

PS. Certain stolen/forged VLK (corporate) keys are voided by SP2

if you have to ask this question, then i must ask what keeps you from not installing it before?

Honestly, I thought I had upgraded but with my wifes PC, kids PCs and work PC, I guess mine got lost in the shuffle...
