Pissed temperamental network

hi.

i've had a home network between 2 computers for years.. But never has it worked all of the time.

i think its just a case of settings or something but every time i upgrade or take my PCs apart for what ever reason i always find it difficult to get my net work to function. And when ever i do fix the problem and it finally works, i'm never really sure what it is i've done or changed that has fixed it.

Basically i had to re build my PCs again and now it don't work! It worked at first, but now nothing. its almost as if something changes from one day i turn the computers on to the next.

sometimes i can see shared folders on from the one computer, but not the other.
Other times (like now) it isn't working t all.

I've had enough trying to muddle thru, & i just want an easy fix. any ideas?

is there a Network config thingy i can download that actually works? cus the windows one is dumb. I can change things that i 'know' are wrong and the network wizard fails to correct it or even spot it.

or maybe someone here knows what i need to do to make sure it works all the time, every time.

My net work consists of cat5 cable, a 10baseT 5 port + uplink Ethernet Hub (of unknown origin), and a pair of identical Realtek RTL8139(A) PCi Fast Ethernet Adapter's.

windows 2000 pro sp4 on this computer, & winME(yes i know) on the other.

Please help, i'd really appreciate it.
cheers.

Frankly, I never did like Windows ME and never put it on any of my own systems. However, I have dealt with it on other people's systems.

Try running the Network Wizard again on both units paying close attention to the options as you go. Be sure to turn on File and Printer sharing for both.

Good luck and be sure to post back with results.

WinMe has known networking issues with other versions of windows. I'm sure that is your problem. I used Me for years and have had the same problems. If both PCs used Me you would be fine, but having been though this many times, I would say put 2000 or XP on the system with Me and all your networking problems will go away.

fixed the problem (again not entirely sure what i did).

But i basically swapped my modem and network card to each others slots. i think when i put my PC back together & the modem & network cards were in different slots, Windows thru a wobbly!.

I also created a new network group, and deleted the old one. (to be on the safe side.) seems to have done the trick!

lol.
