Win2k Help (Again..)

Hey guys..

Okay, here're my questions for win2k..

Right now, i'm using it.. on a separate hard-drive on a second
install I did (because i forgot to enable ACPI and APIC the first
time around).. and I'm quite liking Win2k right now..

BUT, there's one thing that's annoying the hell out of me..

Is there ANY way to get the pagefile to the OUTER sectors of
the harddrive? Speed Disk (which I normally used in win98)
won't touch the damn thing, and Diskeeper moves it to the
END of all the data, so right now, it's near the end of my hard-drive
on this 4.6GB i'm using to test it.. I have it permanently set to
384/384 (I was only testing my hardware to see if everything
would work, no conflicts would arise, i quite like APIC)..

I've spent the last couple of days trying to find out how to put
the pagefile to the beginning of the Hard-Drive.. if I can do that,
I'll be ready to actually move from Win98se to Win2k..

Thanks.

Though it sounds like it might not work for you at this point, I think that it might work to partition your hard drive with the outer sectors in a separate partition, then assigning the page file to that partition...

Would that be the only way to do it? I've read about doing that
as well, but I don't like partitioning any of my hard-drives. =)

Also, i've encountered another error I can't seem to figure out.. It's
only occuring in Win2k.. Looks like "upgrading" has been set back
again.. Maybe later on today I'll try installing WinXP and seeing if
it causes the same problems..

/sigh/ if only I could find Win98se-J, i wouldn't have to try any of
these problems.. Then again, some programs I use didn't install
in my Win2k when I set it to Japanese.. =|

Blargh!

edit:
I isolated it down to my sound that's giving me problems.. Thing was,
it wasn't bothering me during the first install of Win2k that I had..
Everything is same except I enabled APIC this time.. gonna try disabling
it and reinstalling.. this is so fun.

I didn't know you had to specifically enable ACPI or APIC for Win2000.
Please, what settings or command line switches are necessary to enable these? . . . as I may be buying Win2000 soon

You don't have to specifically enable them, though they're
handy to have..

ACPI, you can have enabled in Win98se as well (i didn't..
for some reason.. i always wondered why my computer
would just turn off without shutting windows down first)..

APIC, you also don't have to have enabled.. but it was nice
because it really gave every peice of hardware you had it's
own IRQ (Mine went all the way up to IRQ 17)..

These are enabled via your BIOS.. and is highly recommended
that you turn them on BEFORE the install of an OS.. if you
turn them on after, you'll just cause 2k/XP to get confused and
explode on itself.. Win98se just doesn't care. =P

I've reinstalled 2k about 5 times today.. I can't seem to solve
a problem i'm getting with the 3 games (1 game = emu + roms)
in 2k..

Ah

Thanks man, I did think Win2000 has them on by default. Makes sense it's a BIOS issue.

Thanks for the info

No prob, glad to help. =)

Anyway, no Win2k for me..
I don't know what's causing it, but I keep getting errors in
Half-Life.. I've narrowed it down to when using A3D that the
error comes up and causes it to close.. I've reinstalled Win2k
more than 5 times in the past couple days and nothing I did
(BIOS tweaking, not installing certain things, etc., etc..) seemed
to remedy the situation..

I haven't tried installing any other games to see if it affected
them because I always go back to Half-Life in the long run.. and
if it doesn't work, then screw other games. =p

I'm still gonna try to do some testing.. I don't wanna resort to
WinXP since there are MANY things that piss me off (a couple of
things come to mind right now)..

BLargh!

Okay, this is starting to seriously piss me the fuck off..

I've installed Win2k probably more times than anyone has
in a year this past month.. and I can't seem to figure out
what the hell the problem is..

If there's ANYONE out there that can offer any kind of
advice.. please do.

These are my problems..

In "Live for Speed" (and, probably any other game), after
about 10-15 minutes of play my system hard-locks. The
frame freezes on screen and the sound starts to repeat.

In "Half-Life".. clicking the mouse-button results in a a
program crash (HL.EXE has caused . . .) Of course, this only
happens with the left mouse button.. I can run around clicking
the middle mouse and right mouse button.. but as soon as I
click the left one, it crashes..

My system specs: =--
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
MSI KT3 Ultra-2
1 x 256MB Kingmax DDR333
ATi Radeon 8500le 128MB BGA
RealTEK 8139 NIC
Hercules Fortissimo II

1 LG 52x CD-ROM

The Hard-Drive i use is an old 4GB Quantum..

I've tried everything.. different configs of ACPI, APIC..
Tried moving cards around, tried using different drivers (ie non-
latest).. nothing seems to work.

Yes, there is dowload the diskkeeper (demo ) on like kazza and run a defreg and then go into boot time drefamentation, it has option to defag the mft and move the pagefile to optumized position on next boot..... it works wonders

hmm

Can you maybe try a different version of Fortissimo drivers?
I dunno what else, besides what Neon said . . . video drivers

Ah just to satisfy my curiosity, what do you use left-mouse button for? Shooting?
Can you try using some other button for shooting (or whatever it is), like the Enter key, and see if it still happens?
(I used to have some sporadic issues in CS, with the actual playing of the sound file of the gunshot, when hitting the Shoot button, caused a crash)

About diskkeeper.. I downloaded a demo version of it
a while ago (when i first started playing with Win2k last
week or something).. but I never saw an option to put
the pagefile "at an optimized position" (or anything that
soudned like it).. had the Pro Demo (or whatever, not the
LITE version of it).. Think you could provide a screenie or
something so I know where to find it?

and vamp -- yeah, you're right.. it seems to be when I fire..
bind +attack to another key just results in the same crash..

How did you overcome this problem?

Hehe, my curiosity paid off

When I had that problem, I think I either relaxed my memory timings, or changed my sound card driver

*hits my head repeatedly on my wall*

I'll try to see if I can relax my memory more than
it already it (.. i guess, it's "semi-aggressive" right now)..

if not, i'll have to hunt down an older version of drivers
for my Fortissimo..

yay.

all this just for japanese support.

/continues to hit head

I see your thinking about XP. If your after game support look at www.ntcompatible.com under compatibility it will tell you games that do and don't work along with applications and other software. Some people post comments on what they did to get it to work (click on details for these). For the most part 99% basically all software that works in 2000 works in XP. In most cases all you need to do is install SP2 with compatibility updates or SP3 to get the extra software support that XP has.

I would recommend that you install 2000's patches in this order SP2, compatibility updates (don't ask me where to find them I have them but don't have a place to host them), then SP3 this will give you the compatibilty menu found in XP since Microsoft broke them in SP3. This allows you to fake out programs in to believing you have another OS like say Windows 98.

Well Goodluck

Thanks for the info caqde..

Anyway -- nothing worked.. I tried all relaxed memory
timings.. tried bios defaults (w/ 133fsb).. tried installing
every driver available off Hercules' FTP (i think they have
all the way to 1.01 or something).. Nothing seemed to
work..

So far, I've got one word for this.

Argh.

I found this in Ntcompatible's web page it might be of interest. This is of course running in Xp but the 98 compatible tab when using the patch scheme I described should work.

Quote:
As soon as I try to fire a weapon the game crashes out. If I run it in "98/ME Compatibility Mode" it doesn't crash, but the weapon sounds do not work. This could be a Game Theater XP problem, but this isn't confirmed. AMD T-Bird 800mhz, 512mb DDR, Epox 8KHA+, GeForce 3, Hercules Game Theater XP sound
That is the only one I could find and This proves without a doubt in my mind that it is probably the Sound drivers. Because it can't be the Video Drivers ATI and NVIDIA both have the same problem. But this should get the game to at least play.

I also recently found this link http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;279792 I guess they forgot how to turn it on (Figures). Oh yeah This is if you have SP3 installed. Haven't tested its validity.

Yeah, I honstly think that the soundcard just doesn't work right
in Win2k (the drivers)..

Pity, as I absolutely despise WinXP at this time.. nor do I wish to
convert to NTFS.. I've grown a deep liking for being able to reinstall
my OS without formatting, and doing that with WinXP is too much of
a hassle in my mind.. (Hell, going from WinXP to Win98se without
formatting was a fun task)..

Thanks for the info though! I'm going to do more testing with the
compatibility now.. though, not hearing your gun fire would be
kinda wierd.. =|

Maybe this can also solve some problems for other games as well..

Much appreciated for the help..

Mystik, I had to turn down the Hardware acceleration in 2k to get a couple games running smooth. You will notice that when you back it off a notch it says Recommended. It worked for me and I did not notice a change in sound in any applications.
