Wink How big is your . . .

page file ?

. . . what?

So I wanna know how you guys have your pagefile set. (Pagefile, swap file, whatever . . .)
And if it's "Let Windows decide . . . " how big is it usually (if you even pay attention )?

My setup:
Win98 2nd ed. with 256MB RAM,
Pagefile: 444MB (fixed size) on drive C

I've been fooling around with that setting recently, the best setting I've found so far (at least, while video editing) is 768mb on my 512mb-of-RAM machine

I've got 768 MB for a pagefile set on my first partition on my second HDD. This partition is only used for temp files and the pagefile. I'm using 512M PC3200.

Question.

Why does everyone with 512MB seem to be using 768MB? Am I missing a trick here?

My pagefile is set by windows (1½ x RAM). In my case, having only 256MB RAM, it should be 384. Right now it says:
Recommended: 382
Currently allocated: 383

I always thought the rule was minimum page file was set to 1.5x your ram, and maximum was set to 3x your ram, and that's what I have set right now.....

In my case, I have never seen my pagefile using more than 512MB at any time. So the 1.5x trick is for those "just in case" moments. Also, the larger the pagefile, the slower it is due to a higher possibility of fragmentation and more often disk readings.

Funny, I never heard of any 1.5x rule or any other rule . . . I just had to set mine over 400 to run the Radeon's Ark demo, and left it there ever since

I've got a different question . . . why is everyone setting their pagefile to RAM-type numbers like 384/512/768 etc.?

Because of the 1.5x rule, I've heard about that too, but I don't use a fixed size pagefile. I would if I could move it to the begining of the HDD, but since I can't, I just let the OS manage it.

Crash Override is an unknown quantity at this point

ok here goes my odd and twisted hard drive setup

C:\Windows98...2GB
D:\WindowsXP...4GB
E:\ProgramHD..32GB
F:\Page File 9x...1GB 768MB used for it
G:\PageFile XH...1GB 768MB used for it
H:\KazaaLite.....27GB
I:\Emule..........27GB
J:\Lizzy's D/L....27GB
K:\Shane's D/L.27GB

so I have 2 different HD's setup on my raid array as my page file.....one for each os and so far no complaints on my end

512mb here ..... (I have a gig of ram)

that cuses fragmentation and loss of performace NOT a good Idea best to set a size

You're right. But I still defragment weekly, and keep some 2-3 gigs free at all time on the system drive.

I am a long time fan of Norton Utilities... although I'm not sure anymore with the XP version.
