media center build. what works?

so I have some spare parts floating around and I was thinking of building a media center pc. I've been using XBMC on my xbox but you know, its just a tad under-powered, yea?

well my main rig is a dual core opteron but I dont wanna move this into a media center..

so heres what I was wondering. Would an Athlon XP 2800+ or a P4 2.4ghz be sufficient? I got i think 1gb of ram around here, and I can buy a dx9 graphics card. so yeah, what do you guys think? I'd like some advice since I'm pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to media center PCs.

shit yes.. that'll do for a simple mulitmedia center machine..

I mean a duron 950mhz did the job with only 512mb of ram.

But then again, what ALL are you thinking of putting on it and using it for?

windows media center of course...

i dont think ill have it do recording, just playing. I havent decided yet tho.

i dont have HDTV though so encoding shouldnt be too rough, right?

Are you planning on say slapping a HD-DVD player in it? cause that would change things around quite a bit imo.

nope. im using spare parts, not building an HD-DVD machine. sides I got a 360...i can use that for HD-DVDs.

i do have some hd files but i dont think theres anything more than 720p. and theres almost nothing thats 720p
