Quick question about Icon Caching in win XP
OK, I have this very small problem that has been bugging me for a while- You know the icons in the favorites in IE6? Like the DH shortcut in favorites for example. It has a little custom icon in there when you first save the shortcut, well Mine last about as long as the computer is on, then go back to default. I know there is a place in X=setup to change chach for certain things like thimbnails and such, but I haven't seen anyplace to raise the Icon cache size so I figured I would do it manually. Here are some directions I found to do just that..
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer] Value Name: Max Cached Icons Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value) Value Data: 100 - 4096 (default = 500) Ok, problem is, I dont have that string at all, nothing for Max cached Icons anywhere. Can someone look and see if they have it in XP so I can just add it in, or maybe it is in another place. I did a search and I couldn't find it in the entire reginstry. any Idea anyone???

FAVICONS are not program icons - so you can fiddle with that setting all you like and get nowhere!
http://www.phoebemoon.com/favicon.htm The cure, FAVORG, is a "used to be freeware" tool from PCMAG - and now instead of benefiting from great publicity, they now want subscriptions for them. The passthrough download link (found on google newsgroup searches) MAY still be available, but there has been talk that that server is, or will be, suspended. You MAY find a copy elsewhere, despite redistribution not being permitted I trawled ( and yes, you will find a couple of MY posts ) and downloaded ALL that I could find and access. Giving a copy of a free tool (and it WAS free) to a friend who asks - ain't redistribution

UM, well I found the setting for explorer Icon caching and set it from 500 to 8000 and now the icons stay the same. So I dunno- It worked. (so far) It was in X-setup under explorer/icons then a setting for icon cache size.

Originally from Favicons Disappearing Global-Positioning.com
There is no great mystery here. Favicons are stored in your TIF and so will expire in time. if you only set aside a small amount of disk space as your temp folder then icons will expire more quickly as more files shunt but if you like to keep the Fav-icon on your desktop may be you can do that |

That explains it, I keep a pretty small Internet Explorer temp file- Now that I think about it, the smaller I make it, the shorter those thinks last--- I could just copy them to a folder and change them to the copied ones in that folder-- Makes sense!

yes you can do that..
get the .ico file then place in a permanent folder someplace right click on the favorite's bookmark that you want to change, select properties/change icon/browse then point to the permanent folder |

Thanks, I was just trying to do that, then I realized I cannot find the .ico file for these particular icons-- Where does windows keep these? (the ones next to favorites in IE6 favorites pull down window)-- I looked in IE folder in programs- not there.
Also looking in widows folder w/o much luck-- Maybe in windows/system32 somewhere???? Hmmmmm......

I found a slightly easier way-- but same thing you said to do--
I just went into IE6 properties and the Temporary internet files settings, then view files, then view as type, then view as thumbnails-- whew, all that just to save some icons that sould be saved somewhere other than temporary internet files IMO anyway-- I think there should be separate settings for the different kind of files that go into the temporary internet files folder--- then I could just set the .ico files to be saved indefinately, but what do I know.. Thanks for the help.
