I am running WXP home edition and the 2002 P4 2.4GHZ pc originally had .net framework 1.0, then I added 1.1, and then added 2.0. I need to know if I can uninstall all versions presently starting with 2.0 back and then re-install starting with the 1.1, etc.

I am running SP2 on the OS.

I want to uninstall ALL the versions I now have and when I re-install I would like NOT to install the original 1.0 net framework if I dont need it for the 1.1 to work right.

Can I just re-install the 1.1, then 2.0, then even 3.0 if desired?

I think the 1.1 (+ updates) is offered as an optional Windowsupdate - no need to pass through older versions.

If planning on having 3.0, I'd let that install 2.0 for you, as it is really 2.0 plus additional components. At least, I think it's aupposed to do that, but the 3.0 Redist is about 1/10 the size of the 2.0 - so if it does add the 2.0, it's got to fetch it from somewhere.

On 1.1, the advice for general users IS to install using WindowsUpdate, since that ensures that you receive a fully updated install.

I don't know which installers do you mean, but the 3.0 redist size is 50.3 MB and the 2.0 installer size is 22.4 MB. The 2.0 is included in 3.0 - they both appear in the Add/Remove panel after 3.0 installation. I'm not sure about the 1.0 and 1.1, because their subdirs in the Windows\Microsoft.NET directory contain only a few files.

I have only the 3.0 redist installed and everything is working fine (but I'm currently using only one .NET application ).

Since my pc is 5 yrs. old that is probably why I have the net 1.0 on up to 2.0 installed in it for applications that I may have on my pc that were installed in 2002.

Of course most any up to date video card needs the 2.0 framework to function its control schemes.

I was just wanting to alleviate the Net 1.0 & its hotfix & recent security update but it looks like I am stuck with it unless someone can tell me otherwise !

Below is a response I got from a Tech Guru on what procedure you should follow if you encounter windows update net framework updates that will not install successfully:

1. Uninstall all versions of .NET Framework via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

3. Download and run the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool

4. Download/install a new copy of the most recent version of .NET Framework
1.0, 1.1, and/or 2.0 (as desired) from the Download Center:

5. Install the updates.

This is definitely a pain in the you know where simply because Microsoft writes security updates that will NOT update properly on tons of folks computers !!!!

This is the 3.0 I found, it says 2.8 MB - where is the bigger one.

Update offers 1.1 (I have only 2.0/3.0 installed) as an optional update, I'm guessing that 1.0 is considered obsolete / superseded by 1.1

That's just the web installer. Scroll down in the page, there is "Instructions" section with links to full redist packages.

IMO the easiest thing to do is:

Uninstall ALL .net's.

Then go to microsoft website

download .net 3.0 ONLY, install (it will install 3.0 + 2.0 beside it all in one packaged setup)..

Everything i've ran has worked doing that, that is what i currently do for new machines for .net install anyways...

It's possible to find things that have issues, a good example being:

Apparently, it tests for and will not install without .net 1.1, though will run ok under 2.0 if 1.1 is then removed.

There is not guaranteed backward compatibility, but for the most part, things which do not do anything stupid in 1.1 (and "equals" version tests are definitely stupid) stands a fair chance of working under later versions.

I cannot uninstall the earlier versions of the net framework other then the 2.0 so I sent a request in to microsoft for some help. You can read what I sent them below:

My PC is a P4 2.4ghz IntelMB, 1gig ram, and was purchased in 2002.
With ALL the problems associated with installing these latest security
updates for the .net framework versions I simply uninstalled the Net 2.0
with no problem, re-installed it and was then able to update the latest
security update for the 2.0 version. However I could NOT uninstall the
hotfixes for the ver 1.1, etc. in reverse order from the add\remove list.
After I re-installed the 2.0 I left it in and installed the Windows Installer
Clean up utility and ran it and the ONLY net framework app depicted was the
net 2.0 ! The 1.1 & 1.0 or there hotfixes are NOT even listed in the utility
even though they show up in the control panel add\remove list.

This is what I have now:
Net Ver. 1.0.3705
Net Ver. 1.0 Hotfix KB886906
Net Ver. 1.1
Net Ver. 1.1 Hotfix KB886903
Net. 2.0

I want to uninstall ALL of these in reverse order and then do a fresh
re-install starting per below:

Net. 1.0
Net. Hotfix KB886906
Net. 1.1
Net. 1.1 Hotfix KB886903
Net. 2.0

Then I could probably be able to install the latest security updates for the
1.1 & 1.0

Do I have to uninstall the net 2.0 again before the Net 1.1 & 1.0 and there
early hotfixes above will be listed in the Windows Installer Cleanup utility
for removal ?

I see NO way of getting the recently released security updates to install
for the 1.1 & 1.0 if I cant uninstall these versions and do a fresh install
of them.

Below is the reply I received back from Microsoft tech support. Maybe it will help or aid someone in the future if they have earlier net versions and want to remove them from the pc when the versions will not uninstall from either the add\remove list or with the Windows Installer Clean up utility:

Firstly, I would like to explain that .NET Framework 2.0 is an upgrade version of .NET Framework 1.1. It has included all the functions and features of .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.0 and is more powerful and stable than .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.0. Therefore, if .NET Framework 2.0 and its updates have been installed successfully, we do not need to install .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.0 any more.

5. Restart the computer and this update should not be offered again.

The dotnetfx.exe utility will uninstall any of the framework versions you have that may not uninstall properly from the normal add\remove route but unfortunately this utlity will NOT remove any hotfixes that were installed with the 1.0 & 1.1 versions of the net framework.

When you go to the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, are you clicking the box: Show Updates? You do need to check that box in order to see the hotfixes installed.
