Windows Server 2003 vs. Windows XP Pro: Performance and Efficiency.

I'm thinking about giving Windows Server 2003 a try - as a workstation of course - and i've been wondering from anyone who's used it what performance benefits there are, if any. A few people on Rage have stated that it feels more responsive and not as much of a memory hog as XP is but i'd like some more opinions.

I've been using Windows Server 2003 as a workstation on one of my computers for the past few weeks. It's response feels more 'snappy' but it has compatibility issues that XP Pro wouldn't have- my Palm m505 cradle doesn't ever work when trying to sync, and many programs won't install because they noticed that I'm running a server OS

I only used it for about a week, but it's defnitely faster than XP is every way. Programs launch quicker and games do feel/run smoother. The hd is barely hit which makes me think that this OS is actually using all of my ram, unlike XP. I did run into some compatibility probs with some of my older games, but most recent one's work great. I would definitely still be using it if I had a legal copy Also in all my reformats, I noticed that XP is pretty darn quick itself if you don't install SP1. This service pack definitely puts a damper on XP's speed

Compat problems with games is due to it not being built ground up for games. You did the tweaks for 2k3 right? I'm pretty sure MS will end up releasing patches and updates that will turn 2k3 into what win 2k is now.

This would be... Unlikely, to say the least. Windows Server 2003 is clearly not build for the user. The Win2K games compatibility updates (assuming you're reffering to that) originally built for Win2K Pro do work with the Server version since both are the based on the same kernel, although 2000 Server was not built for the home user, either. Call that a convenient coincidence.

Windows 2003 Server is business-oriented and the only updates it's likely to receive are bugfixes and security patches.
