A916NR Compaq Presario XP Drivers (All Work)
A916NR Drivers (everything works), may or may NOT work for other A900 Presario's. Install in order, reboot after each one. Note Audio and Modem will say they failed, run devmgmt.msc (device manager) and point it to the installation directory's ".inf" file. If questions email me (click name to send msg).
Drivers Installed & Order to install them... Chipset driver http://downloadmirror.intel.com/13499/a08/infinst_autol.exe Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture driver ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe Audio driver (after it fails>run devmgmt.msc>clk. Note, sometimes compaq has files that hp doesn't, use the hp link but change "hp" to "compaq" to see them. Hopefully this will help someone avoid the endless chats with hp and searching the internet. 12/4/2010 reinstalled above A916NR Audio Driver (works). Directions 1. Click on this ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34386.exe and save it, DO NOT run it. It will be saved to C:\SWSetup\SP34386\, on your harddisk. 2. Press (widows key + R) or use Start > Run for the Run window, then type, devmgmt.msc, press OK. When Device Manager window opens click "+" next to, Sound, video and game controllers, then, right click on, Conexant High Definition Audio, then click Uninstall, don't close the device manager as you will need it again after item 3 installation fails. 3. Open Windows Explorer (windows key + E) go to C:\SWSetup\SP34386\, there double click Setup.exe to run it. Continue the install no matter what XP trys to tell you. When you are done it may tell you it failed. 4. Now go back to the Device Manager and double click, Conexant High Definition Audio to open it, select the Driver tab, then click, Update Driver..., next in the Hardware Update Wizard, select, No, not this time, press NEXT, in the next window select, Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then Next, in the next window select, Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, then Next, in next window, click, Have Disk..., In the Install from Disk window, below Copy manufacturerer's files from:, type, C:\SWSetup\SP34386 then press, OK, the Hardware Update Wizard will now show the Model as Conexant Hidgh Definition Audio, click Next, in Update Driver Warning, click Yes. XP will start installing the driver and another window titled Windows File Protection window will appear, in it click Cancel (or you will have to start all over again), then click Yes (note, it will not affect XP except your audio will work), back in the, Hardware Update Wizard, click Finish, back in the, Conexant High Definition Audio Properties window click Close. In the Device Manager window you can now see that the Conexant High Definition Audio has no yellow or red highlight next to it, indicating it is now working, close the Device Manager. Your sound should now work. Last edited by jward; Dec 4, 2010 at 04:31 PM. Reason: Instruction how to install A916NR Audio Driver |

Great post, I'm sure this will help many people out.
I've changed the formating a bit to better suit the forums, and make things more legible. |

"A916NR Drivers (everything works), may or may NOT work for other A900 Presario's" some of the drivers worked for my A900, "A913nr" i am still in search of media card driver and web cam driver. i will post them here as soon as i find them for others to use. shouldn't forcing people to have to use a defective product be illegal?

your instructions for my 916nr do not work for me. Those files never output a sp34386.inf or sp34777.inf.

Re: A916NR Compaq Presario XP Drivers (All Work)
Yeah, be careful with different versions. I overwrote my ethernet driver with one of the Softpaqs in one of these threads, even though I have a 931NR (how different can it be, right?)...and that machine is currently offline.

Re: A916NR Compaq Presario XP Drivers (All Work)
Nathan,
It has been several years since I last did this. As I recall, you need to go to the device manager, reinstall the failed driver (should be a yellow flag next to it). I think I did the following; select the failed driver (device manager), select reinstall driver, I think it asks where the driver is, select "have disk" or a similar selection and then browse to the folder (select the folder) (point to folder) where you unpacked (unzipped) the failed driver files. I think during the initial install (that fails) the driver software assumes the unpacked files are in a different folder than they actually are. By pointing XP to the folder manually the driver software then knows where the files are and the installation succeeds. Hopefully this helps. Note, the folder with the files is the folder you unpacked (unzipped) the driver files to not necessarily the location of the original driver file you got from HardwareHeaven. Hopefully I got all the steps correct. Basically I tried several different ways to get it to work until I stumbled on manually telling XP where the files were. Good Luck, Jack |
