rolleyes My cdrom and burner went poof...

In another one of my bone headed plays, I had to pull and game cd from cdrom, because it wasn't loading properly. I reset my machine and 'poof' my cdrom wasnt working...I would put the cd back in but suddenly I couldn't get the cdrom to work...the drivers are okay, the bios is good in the mobo..hmmm..I tried the elder geek fix and edited the regsitry...no go...
I reinstalled the driver, but still, the device manager says the cdrom is working properly but the cdrom and burner wont recognise the cd's whether it is music or a game... whats a doofus to do..?
I am running xp home edition and nothing is overclocked in my machine...
can anyone help me...

have you tryed to "uninstall" the drive in "device manager"? give that a try.
reboot after that, let windows reset related registries.

I know when I had to remove a CD from one of my drives it didn't set the CD reading mechanism in the right place and so it wouldn't work and I had to do something to it to get it to work again, I don't remeber, but I could have taken it apart to fix it... wish I could help you more but that was a long time ago

Actually now that I have sat and thought about it, I did have to take the cover off and put the read head and mechanism in the position where it should go when a CD was in it, then assembled it again and it read CDs after that until I had to manually eject a CD again

Open up your computer (make sure you unplug shit first) and disconnect all the cables from that cdrom and connect them, and push them in hard.. because that sh1t is hard to push in.... then bo0t up your comp and I'm pretty sure it'll work.

this sounds promising, I have IDE bus mastering with my via chip, maybe this will re-register my irq?

ahhhhg...sounds complicated...I will have to give this some thought...it is possible to manually eject with the tiny hole inthe face plate..hmmmm...

I know it's a mitsumi, but the bios and the OS call it a g6d....odd, huh..

yep, this is the wierd part, I uninstalled both of them and rebooted, the os found drivers and they spun up just once, then refused to work...sniff....
I am gonna try disconnected the cdrom, I will look on the back and see the exact specs and try to manually reinstall the cdrom....what a pain, all this happend after I installed SPK1.

I can't reinstall the OS, unless I set my first boot device to Cdrom I suppose...this is a pain!
Thanx for all your help guys.....any other ideas?
(don't have enough money for XP professional...ha ha)

I didn't understand at first if you had one or two devices. Try them one at a time, i.e. totally disconect the CD-ROM (both IDE and PS cables) and see if the writer works, then vice-versa.

52 x 24 x 52 I have one Identical to it- It's awsome- can burn a disk in 2 min, 11 sec- 800mb

I'll sell you a bran new one that I've been (half assed) trying to sell for a few months. I'll give you a deal, and test it out if you want me too. At this point I just want to sell it- even I don't make any money on it.

I might be in the market if my durn photoshop projects were completed. I am rather embarrased to say that my burner looks good, but my Cdrom is actually not a mitsumi, I put that in my sons machine, i actually have a TOP GLORY ELECTRONICS-G621D-52X. I remember buying it last year at under the label Hival, it has served me faithfully up till now...I wonder if I messed it up when I pulled the ejected the CD after I interrupted the game loading...sniff..

I am gonna crack the case again...use the burner for everything, its a yamaha 2100e, should work for my needs, I wonder if I assigned to many IRQ's manually and that started the whole business. I am using the Hyperion 4 in 1's for my Via chipset on my anemic mobo, ha ha..You can monkey with the bios and get lots of stuff working for you, but I let the OS decide where the IRQ's should go this time and see, get back to you later...thanx...

does the cd drive spin up when you put a cd in? if it does not. try putting it on the other ide channell(&check power). if this does not work(i assume your burner is on that channel ), shitcan it, & use your burner or buy a dvd rom drive. they tend to be built a little better & actually read better.

if you have a office depot, go there. the io/magic 16x with 512 cache is $10 cheaper & it is a good drive.
