casey135 is on a distinguished road

My CD-ROMs keep disappearing in Win XP

I am running WinXP Home(a recent edition that included SP1) and the PC
keeps "losing" my CD R/W and/or DVD-ROM drive. Sometimes they are both lost,
sometimes just the CD R/W (it is slave to the DVD). I have removed and
reinstalled both through Device Manager, physically removed and replaced in
the case, replaced the ribbon cable, and reinstalled XP. Nothing has solved
the problem.
If I go to Add Hardware usually one or both will be visible in the
"connected hardware" window. Selecting either one usually gets bot sets of
drivers back and visible in Explorer again. If neither is visible I reboot
and start with Explorer again. Not sure but believe this started shortly
after some Critical Updates were installed. Any help greatly appreciated

locate the following registries..
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\IDE
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\IDE
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\IDE
under of above you'll see all IDEs devices entries,
right click on "IDE" ->permissions ->add (your name) ->allow/full control...
click the "+", and delete every "CdRom.." keys (do NOT delete any "Disk.." keys)..

next, go to HKLM/system/curretControlset/control/class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}..
and see if any.. "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters" if yes, delete it.

last, uninstall cd-rom and cdrw under "dvd/cd-rom drives" in device manager. reboot.

note- pls "export" the registry keys before delete
