Yet another OS problem
Ok, I don't know if this is an obvious question but.... I'll throw it out there.
Alright I have a OS recovery disk (XP) and was wondering if it's possible to use this disk to install the OS on a new computer? |

It's not possible, and if you manage to do it you will violate the license agreement of that XP installation since it's OEM.

So even if it is "Technically" possible it's not worth the hassle right?

Yeah. Best way would be to get new OEM copy from store.

Well I guess this is as good a time as any to ask if you can run a PC on a single boot using only Ubuntu or if you have to dual-boot with another OS.
Only asking because I would use Ubuntu before Vista at this point, gonna have to wait and see how windows 7 does before they regain my trust. :/ |

Ubuntu uses GRUB as it's boot loader it can handle multiple installed OS's but if you like to dual boot with windows you need to install the windows first then the Ubuntu. It's done this way so that the GRUB will install correctly and find the other OS.

I'm not sure if you answered my question, is Ubuntu able to independently run, or does it have to be dual-booted from another OS?

Yes Ubuntu like any other Linux/Unix can run independently. Most of the web's servers are Linux/Unix computers

This is what happened when my mobo died: Microsoft advised me that I could re-install on the same computer if it is part of an upgrade. They advised me, (after my continued firm but polite persistence) that I could re-install my oem license with a different mobo, ram, cpu, graphic card etc as long as the mobo is from the same manufacturer as the original. To re-activate the license by phone I must state that it is a hardware upgrade. This does totally break Microsoft EULA and is discretionary. I just insisted politely that I paid for a license and it's not my fault my mobo died. So they exercised their discretion. When they initially refused I asked to go through to technical support management and advised me there would be a £50 for this service. I again re-iterated that that would not be fair as I am challenging the validity of their original decision not to re-activate and only someone with authority could look at my situation correctly. It worked. And I got the right result. Needed a good half hour on the phone and lots of patience (and bigging up the professionalism of the original advisor) I hope this provides a little clarity for you.

I've done several OEM XP transfers to new or old or different computers.
All you have to do is make sure the orginal computer is dead... or destroyed... or no longer with windows AT ALL...( wiped clean or the specific liecensed copy).... Example.... Laptop comes with windows XP home eddition OEM.... you wipe it and install windows Vista.... you take the XP oem and install it onto a new computer or older one that has either no windows or a previous version of windows such as 2000. Install using a OEM XP disc (slipstreamed SP3 would be best ) install the don't activate right away, install nessary drivers.. and software when possible. Then Activate, phone in... let them know that the previous machine is a paper weight..... they'll provide you with another code. Volla... YOU CAN ONLY DO THIS ONCE (generally) (although i've managed to do it 3 times for a single orginal xp oem when the first machine was built in 2001)So long as you only use the liecense on only ONE machine at a time, Microsoft is happy..... have it on more then one, and microsoft finds out (and generally they will, i've watched it).... both copies will be invalidated... AND the liecense void... (key will no longer work to activate indefiniteately) I've used 5 XP OEM Laptop keys to transfer to other laptops or to desktops.... microsoft hasn't given me a single hitch in doing so. None of the situations were pirating in any manner. Computer dies.... motherboard shot, hardrive crash, want a more recent desktop or something, it's all possible. You cannot use the Recovery/Restore disks that include windows on a machine other then the one intended..... things go very wrong... very quickly.
