New DX and DX10 for XP?

This was mentioned in a new post that there was a new DirectX this month however it was in the ATI Drivers section and didn't feel like going completely off subject in there so I'm not sure if it was for Vista or XP either.

Did a search for DirectX and there is a project going on here Download DirectX 10 for Windows XP from Alky Project that has DX10 listed for XP however it's an on going project from a third party.

What I'm wondering is if anyone has tried this, is it worth it to even bother with and is M$ planning on releasing it for XP eventually?

I'm also curious as to what version of DX was released. The last DX that was put out for Ver 9.0c was a distributed version from Aug 2008.

My system is running just fine but I'm just more or less curious.

Thanks,

Jand.

You do realise that M$ as you call Microsoft, also made XP, right?

There is a new direct X version of 9.0c every few months, which is the same as the previous one, just with some tiny changes.

You have a powerful enough system, if you want DX10, just get Vista and get it over with. Vista is far better, no matter what some stuborn people say.

Re: New DX and DX10 for XP?

As I mentioned, I was more or less curious. My machine is working just fine and I'm in no rush to move to Vista as a lot of the tools I'm using for work are not Vista ready yet. Microsofts own Matrix program that we're using for instance along with the Server 2003 Admin Pack that I was originally having MMC snap in errors with along with a couple of other programs. I use my machine for both work and games.

There are multiple ways of working around these limitations, like using Dameware to remote into one of the servers after a VPN connection but it's much easier to use the tools on my machine that are set up and running correctly then to have to set up my profile on a server to do the same thing.

It's why I was just asking.

To actually answer the question about whether Microsoft will release this Alky Project for XP, don't hold your breath. Since it's a 3rd party project, and kind of flies in the face of MS's devotion to Vista, I wouldn't expect it to be officially released in any DX updates.

Re: the fact that your system is running just fine, the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" comes to mind. That said, DX updates should not do any harm at all and might make a few things better.

I agree. I would gasp when I heard the word Vista until the wifey got a laptop preinstalled with it and I started using it. After a while, I decided to take the dive with my desktop and haven't had a problem since. Plus, Direct X 11 ain't too far away!

Re: New DX and DX10 for XP?

jandarsun8,

I just looked at you system specs.

You SERIOUSLY need to upgrade to Vista 64 bit! Do it as a dual boot and use XP for work, and Vista for games and other things.

First, it will allow you to use ALL of that 4GB of RAM. Shucks, if you have the $$ you could add 4 more GB of RAM to REALLY let Vista 'do it's thing'.

It would also unleash those 3870s, and allow them to use DX10 in the games the use it. I'm playing Far Cry 2 with DX10 enabled on a 3870 X2, and the graphics are great! Trust me, DX10 is worth it, and it's only going to get better as more games start using it and DX10.1

Man, having XP on your system is like having a Ferarri, and only using it to go back and foreth to the grocery store

Re: New DX and DX10 for XP?

Alky Project has been dead for a while now, and never worked all that well (it was at its initial stages). Microsoft isn't going to convert Direct3D 10 to XP. Though I can hope that there'd be a project (perhaps open source) to convert 10-level-9, which is Direct3D 9 with a Direct3D 10 (or, actually, 11) interface. That'd allow developers to junk the old D3D9 API, even if it'd be used underneath.

Direct3D 9.0c has been out for about 4 years, and is largely unchanged. What does change is D3DX, the utility library that comes with it. Every SDK release has a new version, and programs compiled against it need the matching DLL. That's why an update to DirectX is needed. However, the core is still the same. And yes, the latest SDK release is from this month.
