Shut down taking forever!!!
I can't figure this out...=/
I have a quad core Q9450, 2G OCZ ram, radeon 4870, 250gb HD. Dunno what else to mention... but when I shut down my computer and the screen goes to the login menu looking screen, logging off takes about 10 seconds, saving settings takes about 10-15 seconds, then when it says shutting down that takes like 5 to over 10 minutes....what the fuck is up with that?!?! I just tried defragging, I have 2 partitions, my main is the only one I defragged. 150gb about 55% fragmented and it took like 11 hours to complete the defrag....is that normal? that didn't help my shut down speed... This only started happening lately...last few days. I don't know why............ |

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
sounds like spyware, try reformatting and see if that helps, if it doesnt then it could be a bad HDD or bad RAM

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
maybe it's coz you have lots of apps running in the background etc. Have you tried changing WaitToKillAppTimeout setting in the registry?
If it's not that then have you installed any software or drivers recently, if so try uninstalling/rollback them to check. |

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
Yes =[ I just read that on google and changed that to 500 which is half of what the site recommended, and the hangsomething time to 1000....
memtest came out clean too........... is it possible for nod32 to miss some viruses in the scans? I wonder if it could have been something I downloaded. theres just too much I have to reformat......... |

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
There's several more things you can try...
There's an interesting program called AnVir Task Manager - it's shows the various processes and applications running at all levels with descriptions of the parent applications, and more - available Here. It might help you see what could be causing the problem. Malwarebytes (mbam) can detect some of the most recent spyware/malware available Here. Be sure to update it after installing if it doesn't automatically. You could also try disabling and unplugging your network interface card, then rebooting and shutting down. If time is much shorter - that would be a clue...

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
The operating system tries to end any network connections in a good mannered way when shutting down. If there's some problem with the driver of the network itself then it could take longer to shut down. Anyway, drivers of some type if often involved in this type of problem.

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
Theres a couple drivers im updating at the moment. I recently downloaded microsoft net frame 3 x86. There is a update for that as well as net frame 2. I hope thats the reason why...btw I'm running xp 32 bit...why do i have x86 for both net frame 2 and 3? Do I have the wrong ones?

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
hmmm....would disabling the network drivers be good enough instead of pulling it out? My network card is on my mobo, i think....
i stilll cant figure this out. I tried system restore, but after that windows wouldnt start normally anymore so i had to safe mode>undo sys restore... I tried this website about slow shut downs and that didnt help either... Windows XP Shutdown Troubleshooter this is so annoying.......... |

Re: Shut down taking forever!!!
this is slightly unorthodox like, go to the command prompt
Code:
shutdown -s -f -t 20 |
