Re: VAIO VGN-FW235J downgrade to XP

that notebook has 4GB of RAM... if you install Win XP 32 bit, the OS will not map all of the available RAM...

if you are planing on installing Win Server 2003 EE 32bit or Win XP Pro 64bit, first find out what your specifications are (GPU, CPU, Motherboard, Chipset ,Sound, Camera...), their models and brands. you can do this with Everest, or some other similar program. see if there are available drivers for them from the manufacturers site for Win XP 32bit (if you're planning on installing Win Server 2003) or Win XP 64bit... if you happen to find all the available drivers, install them at your own risc...

Re: VAIO VGN-FW235J downgrade to XP

as i said... that version will only read about 3.somethingGB of your RAM... if you want to install a 32 bit Windows OS that will read the full amount of available memory (i.e. 4GB), install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2... it reads up to 32GB of RAM and you can use the same drivers as Win XP...

besides, i think that Server 2003 has a much larger driver database than XP, so the chipset and the IDE cintroller driver could be in the installation driver database...

EDIT: just in case, here are a couple of links with the XP 32bit drivers for the Intel Cantiga GM45 chipset and the Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA controller:

WOW thanks a lot again man, I am going to partion my drive now and install it. I am fine with using 32 BIT as I am not in it for the performance just the O/S I was going to just use virtual box but this might be a lot better ill let you know how it goes!

XP cannot map 4GB of RAM because there are other memory mapped devices (GFX cards and such) that need their memory to be mapped, since XP 32bit has only 4GB of mapping space (2^32=4294967296 bytes = 4GB), the OS does the smart thing... it unmaps memory so it can map devices that are crucial for the proper work of the rig...
