Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

I can't say that I hate XP. It was certainly better than 98, even at it's best.

XP had a nice long run, and at the end it really was a pretty decent OS. However, it's day has passed, and it's time for people to move up to a better OS in the form of Vista or Windows 7 in 64 bit.

why do you say "XP had a nice long run"... i still use an XP based OS (Server 2003)... XP is a great OS when it comes to stability and simplicity... a lot better than '98 as you put it... ... but i wouldn't say the XP days are over... here (where i live) people still use XP as their primary OS... Vista is only installed on notebooks (only because they come preinstalled with the damn thing)... so in my opinion the XP days are not over... there are still some older rigs out there are just not Vista or Win7 capable, but they work great under XP...

oh, and about the article, i think it's nice... ... it can help a lot of XP users become more aware about their vaunrability...

Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

xp is better then 98 granted.. yes...just like 98 is better then windows 95..... it is nowhere near as solid a product as vista or win7....

aside from a retro lookback.... i hate XP for the simple fact that isn't so easily comprimised..... and while i get alot of business due to this.... i find it unfortuneate for the customer.

Nice post !!

On XP I don't hate it either and to be quite frank overall XP SP2 (32 bit) in my experience is still the most stable OS when overclocking. The issue for me is 64 bit XP never gelled with me and was plagued with driver issues right from the inset.

I don't hate XP but man after going back to it after using Vista 64 bit it is SO SLOW in general

ditto here mac.
still using xp on my laptop. mostly cause i dont use it much, xp is just fine for what it does & cant justify buying xp for it. otherwise vista 64 is the ticket.

Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

while your personal opinion is just fine, xp sp2 or sp3 are way better than any vers of 98se on every level.
still have a copy of that around here & it was a good os, i stuck with it for a while after xp was released. but once sp1 came out there was no reason t ostay with it anymore.

Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

XP blows 98se out of the water..... i've actually recently had to set up a few older machines with something older then xp/2000 using the 9x kernal.

Ironically, windows ME worked far better then 98se for the circumstances. Actually i find ME IF it installs without an issue, and doesn't give a single error during the initial set of installs, is the best 9x OS to date, however if there is a problem, wipe install 98se cause it's not worth hassling around with. ME is picky.

Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

Win ME is the worst Win I have ever experienced ,lots of worms and bugs , no sp or updates , so Microsoft hurried to release XP after the failure of ME.

Re: XP's Dangerous Defaults

windows ME wasn't all that bad... it was just extremely tempermental..... If it didn't like your computer, you knew about it... emediately usually..... if it did like it, you never had a problem with it, the performance was excellent.... Best performing 9x OS to date provided you didn't have any issues.

My best Voodoo 3 3000 and Kyro 2 as well as ATI results were from windows ME, outperforming windows 98se quite easily.

On ME for starters you had to use third party software to make the task manager work properly ... WARNING
