URGENT XP prob
HELP! i got a pop up from DXDLL saying something about a malicious intrusion and then everything went pear-shaped from there! i was able to remove the virus but now all XP faulty. im unable to restore, enter safe mode (pressing F8 only gets me into boot sequence), cut/copy and paste, enter the internet (im using another computer to do this), etc. will i need to repair - the xp is an oem and i dont have the disk, but i do have other xp disks? how do i backup/restore program files without licenced disks for eg microsoft office? is there a way of entering safemode via START and RUN to run system restore (not allowing me to access system restore via START and RUN)? or is there a program (that i dont have to pay for because im ineligible for credit and im not falling into that trap anyways!) is it a registry problem? if it is will i need to do a system restore? and how do i fix registry problems?
all assistance greatly appreciated! Last edited by eric500; Jul 25, 2009 at 07:32 AM. |

Re: URGENT XP prob
i'm confused!
1)when you say that you cleaned the virus!, hope what you meant is that you put the hard drive into another system to scan it, and thus cleaned it 2)i don't get what you meant by pear-shaped? from my little understanding of viruses, is that when they infect you pc, they usually infect the restore also, so even if you restore your system it will reinfect it!....... usually when an anti virus scans and detects this it will be unable to delete it... (not very sure why that is .. but the only way to delete the infection is when you disable restore, thus deleting the Restore files) if it about serials of office then Google it up!,, they are always in the registry some where! i found some thing "here" not sure if it helps with your xp!....... usually after an infection it is always advisable to wipe(format) the system and and start afresh, as you would not know which files have been changed... to back your data you can always download a live boot disk!

Re: URGENT XP prob
thanks charm_quark but i have the xp disk, just not the others. something in xp has been switched off and im able to do very little with windows. i can "extract files" to a location but thats all i can do instead of "cut/copy" and "paste". im groping in the dark for the on switch for the other windows apps. this problem is causing me a great deal of distress as i dont want have to wipe the HDD to start again as i will lose everything! ps - i dont think its a registry prob or it could be but only affects some apps and not others.

Re: URGENT XP prob
well for starters - no cut/copy or paste; some task bar options not working; unable to get onto the internet; unable to access system tools such as system info, or restore; unable to get into safe mode etc (im not sure if anything else is not working as i dont use much else than whats already listed). thanks charm_quark.

Re: URGENT XP prob
You can do repair. Boot from XP CD and when it will finish 1st load press ENTER to continue (like you would in a normal installation). Then automatically it will search any windows installation are already existing in your harddrive and it will show it. When it does "Microsoft Windows ...." THEN press R (repair) and it will start an installation above your existing one. It will not erase any data or documents, as it will install system core files again to your windows drive. These procedure cures 99% unless your HDD is corrupt. In this case you can access it if you have another HDD with OS on it.

![]() i would do this ONLY IF the person has some rare drivers or some rare out of date software that he really needs... if this is not the case, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone... a nice clean install of XP would be much more appropriate...

Re: URGENT XP prob
hey! i'm just brainstorming, was wondering how good is your hard drive, any bad sectors??... and check this if this works? so at least you can get out of safe mode!
EDIT: also check your Boot.ini file! and see it there is a script in it, that is producing the unwanted result
