If you don't have any use for Windows Messenger in XP, you can get rid of it entirely....along with any of the nagging popup notices that show up at the most inopportune time. (Is there ever an OPPORTUNE time?)
Anyway, it's very simple and easy to get your system configured to allow you to completely uninstall Windows Messenger....not just the popups and services activating. Follow this link. Either option will work, but I preferred Option #2. It worked like a charm. http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsdsblwm.html |

also be aware if you dont want to completely deinstall messenger meaning there might be a time in the future you wish to run it, or if you use something like Trillian pro. you can set it not to load at all. (like I have)
go to start/run/gpedit.msc local computer policy, computer configuration, administrative templates, windows components, windows messenger do not allow windows messenger to be run/right click properties. alter setting. do not automatically start windows messenger initially/right click properties. alter setting. also if you are getting those annoying windows pop up message boxes spamming some site you never heard of you can also turn that service off. control panel/administrative tools/services/messenger, right click, properties, set to disabled. |

guys those services have absolutely nothing to do with Windows Messenger although I can see how you would get confused
Messenger Service (Not related to windows messenger) is a service that allows for sending pop up messages over a network. Just set the Messenger Service to disabled. Also if you dont like Windows Messenger itself (once again nothing to do with Messenger Service) and do not wish it to run just open up the main window and click on Tools and select Options. In that window click on the General Tab and uncheck these 2 things: 1. Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows 2. Allow to run in background |

Afaik the messenger service is gone on W2k since SP4,
so that would be the easiest way to get rid of it. You should infact install the SP4 if you have W2k, making it the meanest gameing machine IMHO. |

If you rename the 'messenger ' file to something like 'messengeroff', it stops it from loading ever......good if you don't completely want to uninstall messenger.....

BAD IDEA You never want to rename a programs folder on the fly like that. Especially not for an integrated Windows Component

Im not saying it doesnt have the effect you were going for
I was saying it can have other effects as well that you dont want to deal with ![]() It would be like recommending someone rename jalapenos to green peppers so they would sell more. It would have the desired effect of selling more but people who hate hot peppers would be pissed off lol Chances are it would be fine with the renaming but if an app tries to call up that code it can cause crashing errors. Basically you would have to disable every system component that could ever call on Windows Messenger to run some items. That includes parts of the Help System. You would have to make sure to make sure that hotmail wasnt trying to load it up or Outlook (Express). Otherwise your systems could get buggy really fast anytime something wanted it. Much simpler to just uncheck Run Application In Background button and tell it not to start with windows. EDIT-BTW didnt mean to sound so harsh in the previous post.....hard to get that form of sarcasm across on the net think of it in the vein of a comedy movie with an owner telling his dog that hes been a very very very very.....etc BAD DOGGIE
