Hey guys... I'm back with another potentially stupid question.
We'll be using DELL's wifi connection app on our laptops from now on. Our users are used to using the default windows wifi connection icon in Windows XP ... now, I want that icon removed. I don't want users to even SEE the windows wifi icon at the bottom right corner... since if you double click on it now, it says that WIFI connections cannot be found (cuz the DELL app is the default wifi in use...) I know I know... I already unchecked both boxes at the botton of the wifi window (Show icon in notification area when connected + Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity) but it's still there............. Any thoughts? Reg key? Service to disable? Computer to explode? thanks P.S. no I do not want to hide inactive icons........... |

Re: "Wireless Network Connection" icon
Trust me, it's not a stupid question. There are 2 ways to do this: through the registry, and via Group Policy. The first may not always work, but it's worth a shot, and the latter only works on Professional, it won't work on Home as there is no Group Policy with it.
Registry Just dump what's below and above the lines into a txt file, rename it to .reg once done, and either double click it to add it, or right-click then merge: _________________ Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}] @="Network Connections Tray" [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}\DefaultIcon] [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\WINNT\\system32\\NETSHELL.dll" "ThreadingModel"="Both" ____________________ Be sure to go to the end of "Both", and hit enter so that you create a new line below it. To re-enable just take the - (minus) sign out of the beginning of each HKEY listing. The second way is via Group Policy editor: Go to Start | Run | type in GPEdit.msc, and hit enter. Expand User Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Start Menu and Taskbar. You will see listings for the clock, volume control, network, and battery/power. Just change the state to Disable (I think you can also set it to Not Configured) for whatever you want to enable/disable. After that just log off, or restart the PC for the changes to take effect. |
