Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

Hi guys I am a new member here but i am hoping that you with your infinite wisdom can help me lol, so here is my problem.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-BX61MN which came with Windows Vista when i bought it, I recently lent it to a colleague although when it was returned it no longer had Vista installed but for some inexplicable reason it now has Windows XP SP2, Unfortunately due to me working away i don't have my Vista CD or any of the disks for Drivers ECT which the computer came with to hand.

As a consequence of XP SP2 being installed my Sound, Camera and Microphone no longer seem to work [sound being the most important to me]

I have since tried installing the drivers here VAIO : Sony Europe

Yet the sound still does not work, infact when i go into 'sound and audio device properties' it says "no audio device"

What do i do guys?
Thanks in advance
Benji

Borrow a Vista installation disc. The CD key printed on the underside of the laptop should work fine.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

not gonna happen. We, or you, can't snap our fingers to make things work like that.

options are: uninstall whatever drivers for sounds/camera etc you have installed.
Then look at the manufacturer site for XP drivers. Vista drivers don't work for XP.

Or do what Takaharu suggested.

There is nothing else that can be done.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

Do you know what the actual sound hardware is? Maybe you can get a generic driver set from the chip maker, like you can for a realtek chipset....... Also you could uninstall and reinstall the ones you tried, maybe they just didn't take the first time.... use a fresh download in case there was a corrupt file.

i'm sorry. I didn't mean to suggest he was using/trying Vista drivers on an XP machine. I thought I'd just mention it, to be safe and to have covered that base.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

Your other option would be to just upgrade to WIN 7.

If it was running Vista OK, then it will probably run WIN 7 even better.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

swear sony's laptops have a factory restore function from a hidden imaged partition..

invoke it...

I beleive it's started by hitting the power button and then emediately hold ALT and hitting the F10 key..... mash those 2 keys while the laptop boots and you should be able to do a full factory restore back to vista the way the machine came like brand new.

just backup your data before you go through the restore.. because the restore will wipe everything CLEAN.

and hang your friend or whoever had it before hand.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

Well you were right Judas, there is a Vaio recovery tool if you press ALT + F10.

I did a complete recovery yet it seems to have reinstalled Windows XP SP2 again lol even though it definitely cae preinstalled with Vista.

So seems we are back to square one guys! Any more suggestions?

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

Whoa.... that is totally bizzare.. what did that guy do to your machine..

i would phone sony asap and say "wtf" because if it's got a windows vista stick on the bottom of the laptop..... they screwed up.. course being vista.. and being sony... they'll blow you off like it's never been their problem..

Your right i might just phone Sony up although i have owned this now for about 2 years and i don't know what they would do abotu it, but you are rihgt it does have a windows Vista sticker on it.

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

something is definitely messed up...

Least you know it has a vista stick and cd key (on the bottom)... so if you can.... even just download a OEM copy (non-cracked) ISO from a GOOD place.. at which you will have to take your own risks on... and burn the dvd so you can install windows vista again using the key on the bottom..

maybe even worthwhile installing the 64bit version...

Re: Downgraded form vista to XP: Driver problems

As far as downloading an OS goes, not only would i not know where to look it would be a problem for me to download, as i eluded to earlier i am working away and therefore i only have '3' Mobile Broadband [USB Dongle] so it costs me like £25 per 7GB so i dread to think how much it owuld sot to download a whole OS lol.

I also considered downloading Ubuntu or debian but even they would take a day to download
