help! trojan to destroy my computer

A friend recently downloaded a .rar file which contained a virus. Now the virus has so far stopped the desktop from working all together. and the start bar no longer appears. And right clicking doesn't work. Also pressing f11 at start-up doesn't work it just freezes with a blank screen . I managed to start in safe mode with command prompt and ran compmgmt.msc but when I click on disk management it says its disabled. So I can't mark as active the partition thingy that makes it run restore. Is there any other way to restore this computer. i tried system restore to an earlier date but it appears that it was disabled . So can't return to earlier than when i enabled it which was this morning. um other then that i don't have the disks that xp came with because the computer was given to me as a gift. Any suggestions as on how to fix this ? Would be much appreciated as I'm self employed and all my work is done on the computer bland I can't afford a new one for quite some time. Thnx

Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

This got rid of the Windows Repair malware for me and it sounds like the thing you have is similar.

Re: help! trojan to destroy my computer

At this point, this is simply a rescue mission.

Get access to your files and save them, then format and install windows. Usually one of the repair options will give you a screen where you can browse for a driver or something, the dialog box usually allows you to copy/paste files while looking for a driver. I use this dialog to backup to USB hard drive, or a second hard drive.

You want personal documents, any internet favourites, outlook files etc. and then you need to bite the bullet. Viruses can do so much damage to windows files etc, you can never be truly sure it's gone.
