Hey, I'm sure not many people use win 2k anymore but i have a question.
I'm trying to run an old game that i think will not run if there is too much memory. ![]() Its Need for speed 2 SE. ![]() I remember that in windows 98 there used to be a way in the setting to 'hide' how much memory windows could see/use . as win98 didn't run properly above 256mb RAM . My question is, is there a similar system tweak/setting somewhere in windows 2000 that will let me control how much memory windows can see/use? I know win2000 it self hasn't got a problem with my 2GB of memory, but I'm hoping if I can restrict the amount it uses to just 256mb I might be able to run need for speed 2. simples. So is there such a setting in win 2000? like there was in win 98?

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
I wonder if it's not dependant on the good old DOS mode that Win95/98/Me has built in but 2000/XP and onwards does not have at all.

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
well.. i dunno, but its not a DOS game . And I'm sure I've had it running on win 2k in the past when i had much less memory.
![]() I tried to install it on my main pc, but it won't even install on that because its a 64bit OS with no support for the 16bit installer

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
I've ran need for speed under windows 7 x64 even just fine....
however using the 3DFX Glide is another matter that only works with one glide wrapper which i can't think of at the moment.... I know that it takes a little figuring to work out though.. The only memory thing i know about though reguarding NFS2SE is when using the Glide on an actual 3DFX product above the V3 series is a switch in the 3DFX control panel to limit textureing memory to i think 12mb or something like that.

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
humm, this is interesting. How did you get it to install on win7 x64?
It just tells me this is not a valid win 32 application when i try to install it. But anyway, I've just got my retro rig up and running with a genuine V5 5500 PCi on win2k. Maybe i need to tweak the texture memory size. Thing is, even the software version isn't working. "just tells me it has generated errors and needs to close"But the 3DFX version gives me a memory error instead: Quote:

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
i really haven't touched up on the whole NFS2SE thing for a few years now...
But installing NFS2SE worked flawlessly for me... i think i may have used the win98/me capability mode.. i'm not entirely sure.... I have to track down the disc again and see what i find.. i'm still trying to figure out which glide wrapper i was using that worked great.... It's a toughy though..

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
If the specs are of a low enough requirement you can probably run the game in a virtual machine if you unable to run it in the native OS.
I had to do that for some of the really old games that someone wanted to play (eg: the original Warcraft) but the graphics and audio work absolutely fine.

Re: Windows 2000 memory question
yeah I've played around with some of those solutions..
but still have to use a wrapper for the higher quality stuff.... and wrappers inside a virtual machine usually run like crap lol
