....what would the best online tweak guides be? (For a total newb with a very negative attitude towards XP preferably...)

Windows XP is composed of many different "services" (most of which you don't need and will never need). You can easily disable and enable certain services by going to:
Start-->Run-->"services.msc" and then rightclicking your desired service and enabling/disabling it. HERE: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm is a guide that tells you what to enable/disable and what the effects are. I'd recommend you steer clear of the "gaming tweaks" and "super tweaks" and simply follow the "safe tweaks" path for now. Once you become comfortable with this, visit this page: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm This page explains in detail what every service does and can allow you to disable more tweaks based on what you do/don't use Windows for. For example, you would disable the "server" service if your computer is not a server etc.... I did these and now I like XP better than 2k and 98 both ![]() After doing all these tweaks, download this app: http://www.totalidea.de/frameset-tweakxp.htm The FIRST THING you should do with this app is to click on "Hardware Tweaks" and then choose your CPU and then "open optimization wizard" and then "tweak my system now". Then, go to "Cache Optimization" (in the left menu) and choose the appropriate options. That should be all you need to do to tweak your system .

LOL I pity you guys for having had to work so hard ![]() @digital: Give XP another proper chance. You say you've tweaked 98SE to the bone, so why not do that to XP? Just do it. You'll be happier without that crappy OS that "slows down over time" and then surprises you when you format your harddrive and reinstall and makes you think that you forgot what you did to tweak it

I know this is gonna get a boo hiss reply but why bother tweaking xp?
I mean Pro I can understand ya tweakin but not Home. For me my home edition runs like a dream on my 1.4 Tbird with 512MB of PC-133 (Not to say im not upgrading for gaming purposes but the OS is awesome)As long as you have 384MB of RAM or more Id say with HE that you never have to turn anything off......I've tried and no performance difference at all. However with Pro Id say shut off RDC (Remote Desktop Connection). Turn down system restore to a minimal point. If you have 512MB of RAM set your paging file to 384MB (This tip works for HE and Pro as do the following). Make sure you stay defragged once a week or so on a friday night just set it to run when you go to bed. Once a month or every 2 months use Diskeeper 7 to run a boot time defrag (Which takes hours but is worth it). And once in a while run the MS Bootvis program ![]() Doing that should keep it speedy. |

I use corporate and do some manual tweaking, but I DONT run any tweaks (meaning purchased software) for the OS at all. I find over time they can even cause some issues (some certainly have on the SP leaked builds). I posted a tweaking guide in the technology section a little while ago, ill have a look for the thread later and maybe make it sticky again.
XP home and XP corp are virtually identical apart from some extra options in the Pro version. Pro and Corp is a better OS with better networking options and security facilities. |

Oh, you wanna know what the differences between home, pro, corp and enterprise are?
Home: only supports single processor systems... has limited features... and no server capability Proffessional: Supports up to two processors... has an extended feature set ... and can handle up to eight connections as a server. Corporate: Supports up to four processors... has a featureset for server apps... and can handle an unlimited(?) number of connections. Enterprise: Supports in excess of four processors... features? dunno never tried it... and can handle unlimited server connections. I do believe, however, that the versions can very easily be hacked to any other version (in regards to the number of server connections). I've never tried this and i'm doubtful that you could change the optimizations (for the number of processors), but it seems very realistic to give XP an unlimited server connection base. So it seems that the only differences between the versions are the software packages that come with them. LOL i still think Pro is probably best.

One thing people don't know is that Professional supports the Multilanguage User Interface. This feature is truly amazing, although the add-on to enable it cannot be downloaded legally or purchased. You need to have a site/volume-license to get it, andit is incredible, in my opinion. It allows you to totally switch the language of the OS. Totally. Menus, Start button, Help files -- everything.
I give it two paws up.

It's easily fixed, but this thing bugs me like no other XP feature:
This is Windows XP Professional, people! Why do I need an animated DOG to help me search for files?!!!?!!!!!?!!! I understand this feature being present in Home, but WHY IS IT IN A PRODUCT WITH "PROFESSIONAL" IN ITS NAME?!?!?!?!

Well, i wouldn't call the people at my work "professionals" either. LOL
seriously... salespeople, and marketing... well they just are not too bright. I guess if they are "professional" then winxp pro is "professional". Its just like that... but i think having to frag the dog is a minor price to pay for some of the better features in xp.

...but I'm going to go ahead and give XP a go as a dual-boot on Blue. (She's due for a low-level HD format soon anyways....
) Wish me luck, I can't tell if I'm nervous or aggravated.

![]() Don't tell me you couldn't get the array installed....what controller do you have ? I got an onboard promise and was no trouble at all. Haven't found bad things about XP yet..(well maybe the limited support for older games) it's just some getting used to the new interface..i'm not switching to old style..i like the new style.

I also am runiing promise ide controller cards did you have them in during install??? If not then this is what i did: after one install when then card wasn't in xp would'nt recognize my other drives, so I started a boot install and went as far to the point where you partition drives there it found the drives, I partitioned them there and after partitioning I stopped install, cold-booted and violla' the drives had been registered in the boot sector and registry.
