Help with Windows XP Home

Ok, I've had this problem three times..and the only soloution is to reformat..but this time I want to see if I can gain help instead of whiping out my C: drive of critical files.

I go to "disk clean" and it just freezes..not my system..but stays there..and even after I cancel it..my CPU has 100% in-use..even AFTER I click cancel..I have to reboot so that it goes away..what's the problem here? Can someone help? I scanned for viruses..it's all clear.

open Registry Editor and locate the following..

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files

click on "Compress old files", on right pane, pls tell me if you have the same values as below??, if not what do you have on "Priority"??

(DEfault)= {B50F5260-0C21-11D2-AB56-00A0C9082678}"
"Priority"= 0000012c

regardless of the registry values there!
you'll have to tweak your XP, reformat/re-install will not help it'll come about again.

at the location on above posted..
click on "Compress old files" and export the entry, save it as any name (eg. CompressOldFiles_original.reg)

R-Click on the "Compress old files" and select "Delete", no need to reboot.
note- after the registry entry has been removed, there will be no "Compress old files" options in the "Disk cleanup" utility. (put it back with the .reg you've saved in the above step)

next, open Run.. dialox box and type "Cleanmgr.exe" (without the "") and enter.
select your boot part. drive ...Drive: (C and click Okay, see if it's speedup now??

Ok, assuming you've saved the old registry.. as i mentioned,
make a .reg file from below and import it.

;----------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files]

;-----------------------

also could be the temps/catalog files are corrupted, delete all the files manually...

open Run.. and type.. inetcpl.cpl -->Delete Files.../Delete all offline content.

open Run.. type.. %temp% ..delete all the files/folders in there.

R-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage"
click the "+" to expand -->Services and Applications -->Indexing Service -->System, click on "Directories", on the right pane, double-click on each "directory" in there and select "No" at the "Include in Index?" box.

lastly, open drive(s) "Properties" and unselect "Allow Indexing Service to index...."
and then select Apply changes to C:\... subfolders and files..

run the disk cleanup utility again. see if any better this time.
