i have no idea. but this is the first time they have put up ati drivers on the update site. round the same time as 3.8 cats were released. i would guess they might be ati(microsoft) drivers.without the control panel.
the same as you would get for nvidia(microsoft) basic vga cats a presume. partly the reason i have disabled auto update. Last edited by MIG-31; Nov 27, 2003 at 08:13 PM. |

Must say, I don't know, but have never bothered with the Windows Driver updates via Windows Update for any drivers- I've always kept up manually with the manufacturer/vendor, and use Omegadrive's video drivers for the video in the three machines I use regularly - wouldn't want to screw up the process.
I've noticed for months now that some have a lot of trouble at times getting his drivers to work and in large part it seems because folks are going back and forth between his and ATI's own drivers. His package is designed (it seems) to work properly when updating or overwriting a previous package of his - I've been doing this exclusively for over a year now since before the Cats were introduced, and I have had install glitches, but only when he didn't have the proper PCI/Ven ID in his .inf files, which I have been able to either figure out and fix myself or use Patje's modder.

Oh I disabled it as well
But I check it out every few days just to stay current. And yes it's the first time I've ever seen anything from ATI on there.

For my laptop at work and an IBM I use as my primary desktop there (with ATI graphics - my spec for the machine) I've seen a couple updates, but very small (less than 150k each time) and they weren't documented enough for me to tell exactly what the heck they were going to do, so I didn't use them.

The ATI drivers at MS Update don't include OpenGL or any fancy features, they are just BASIC drivers so the system knows how to utilize your card in it's most rudimentary form, DirectX is all they support, and poorly at that. I noticed that driver's immediate appearence after installing the 3.10 beta drivers. As soon as you use 'certified' drivers, it will disappear from Win Update's list. In fact, even the old 3.5 'hotfix' drivers made it disappear.
Just ignore it. They most definitely are NOT better than the drivers ATI or Omega supplies. In fact, the ONLY driver update I've ever used from MS Update that hasn't screwed me over has been an updated driver for my LAN card. And if you ever see one for your Sound Blaster there, avoid it like the plague. |
