Q: I installed DirectX 9 and now 3DMark2001 SE tells me that I need DirectX 8.1, what gives?
A: We have noticed this behavior and the solution is quite easy. Uninstall your 3DMark2001 SE, download the latest version (Build 330) if you don`t have it already, reboot your machine and install 3DMark2001 SE again.

3d Mark

actually.. no.... trying to install DX8 over DX9... doesn't work.... it just say that there is already an updated version installed... and will auto cancel out....

There used to be a program called "Dx Buster" that would get rid of DirectX. Not sure if it is still around and whether it will work on Dx9. Seriously, screwing up your OS just for an old Benchmark like that is silly.

Getting the 330 version of 3DMark2k1 works like a charm.

Although formatting your system partition will work, it is a long and boring process. It's especially unnecessary if you have a System Restore function on your OS. If you remember the date when you installed DX9 on your system, you can use System Restore to restore your computer to the state that didn't have DX9 installed.

That way, you won't have to reformat and start all over which is very time consuming.
