I know you start off; format c: then; md win9x then; cd win9x ... But I can't remember what to do after this! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks |

Format C:
cd c: md win98 (for win98) or md win9x (for winme) then go to your cd-rom drive with the winme or win98 disk cd win98 or cd win9x copy *.* c:\win98 or copy *.* c:\win9x remove the c-d then go to c:\win98 or win9x and type setup go from there. hope this helps. i am in a hurry. |

...why would you want to copy the installation to the HD?... and what's the MD? do.... i've always just went:
fdisk /mbr fdisk (i'd setup the partitions) Format (partitions) reboot... and let the machine boot from cd.... or else just type D:\setup

You have to create the directory in order to copy it to the hdd

Copying to the HD first allows for a faster install. As the HD is faster than the CD-rom. I think Dell does this, and a few other Computer manufactures (even with the newer OS's). If you have ever looked at a computer from such companies you will find the install CD on the computer's HD. It also let's you run the computer and not have to worry about the lovely message that says "Please insert the Windows 9X cd" during some driver install's because the computer believe's the cd is in whatever Directory you put it in. I have done this before and it is quite useful.
Hope this answered your question. random dos commands / executable files MD - Make Directory CD - change Directory copy - as it says del - delete nuff said type - displays contents of a file move - does as says xcopy - copies all files in a directory kind of like copy *.* but much more powerful path - allows you to run commands in other directory as if you were in that directory dir - displays commands like list in unix mscdex - dos cd utility fdisk - partition software format - does as says edit - ulitmate text editor for dos (no problems creating files with odd extensions) echo - command to turn off/on text displayed by commands in dos If you are really lazy make a floppy that runs a batch file that does it all for you without lifting a finger . That way you will never have to ask for this again well until the floppy expires (well maybe a cd they last longer).

Hmm...I thought the install for Windows would do the copying for you at the start.

If anything, copying will be slower as it's an extra step that's required You would only want to copy to a hard drive first if you were installing onto more than one hard drive. Then it would be faster. However, most people here wouldn't need to do that.

Copying to HD (if you leave it there) also avoids the need to go rummaging for the Windows CD when some small change demands it.
It also means that you know everything you need has read successfully from the CD before you start. |

The reason for doing that is to keep from having to put in your Win98 CD when installing certain progs and drivers. It also installs much faster and it puts all of your cab files on your HD. After you do it that way, you will not need your win98/me cd-rom again until your next format and reinstall.

Like I said windows will think the cd is on the HD. That version of windows always loved to ask for the CD to install almost any driver. Even asked for it when you REMOVED CERTAIN DRIVERS OR WINDOWS COMPONENTS. It was alittle annoying to me. I thought I would be doing that in 2k but I haven't even touched the CD since I installed it so I am very happy.
