do you like to remove or keep win 98?

would you like to have 2 windows XP that both are on its own partition, both uses C:\ as its system drive letter, boots your 'internet' XP while the 'music' XP is hiden, remove either ones from your system with no ill effect....??

something like this...

Remove a Dual Boot win98 and winXP will depend on where you have installed Win98 and WinXP.
1st check out that how you can remove win98, i give this info in the case that you dont know how to do it.

Remove Win9x/Me & Keep Win XP
http://michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html#Remove

as for you like to have 2 winXPs,
you havent answered my question,
if yes, this will require..,
backing up your important files, reformat and clean install, making an image of your OS partition and partitioning your HDD etc...

Or you like to have a dual boot winXP and winXP with MS boot manager like the one you are using now on win98 & winXP..

allow me to explain this to you abit becos i think you don't understand,

these 2 winXPs will use a seperate partition completely meanings the 2 XPs will use/have both of its own 'system partition' (partition that contains..boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect) and 'boot partition' (partition that contained..\WINDOWS folder)..

while both 'system partition' and 'boot partition' will be in same partition for each XPs.

when booting XP for 'Internet and graphics' the other XP is hiden..
same with when booting XP for 'Music'..

and you will have C:\ for both win XPs partitions.

Now, if you like to continue..
it means you will have to do a reformat, a new installation, etc etcs..
becos it'll be very hard trying to keep the present XP.
willing to comply with that??

eventho, every steps you're about to take are very easy.. i have this done in less than an hour..
since this is very new to you and you'll do everything yourself, so don't lack of patience this may take days for you, i'll assist you as much as i can, hope you are a quick learner...

some questions... could be more after this..
i know its alot,.. but i need to know then i can look after you..
so pls give me all details...

do you have the Partition Magic and Norton Ghost 2003 softwares?
if not, try to have it..

does your system uses floppy drive?
How big is your HDD size?
How many HDDs on the PC now?
How many partition on each HDD and what kind of all the files in each partition?

you can start backing up your important file and maybe you can also use the FAST Wizard (Files and Settings Transfer) to backup your XP settings and etc..

dont format now, you need internet till you understand all the steps then you can have this done in one time.

okay, as i can see now is the F:\(winXP) is a logical drive from the extended partition, and your C:\(win98) is the only primary partition on the disk.

you don't want to keep this setting and as long as you've already backed up all of your files on the D:\ and E:\ partitions... so i think you won't mind if you have to format the whole disk and start over. right?

i'll do that as soon as i can..

now pls make ready on some utility programs...
1) Partition Magic Rescue Disks (2 floppy disks)
2) XP boot floppy disk (1 disk)- http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/
(note-- be sure to edit the boot.ini and replace all "WINNT" into "WINDOWS")
3) win98 startup disk.

if you use OE (outlook express) and like to backup..

go to your Partition Magic program files folder and copy these 2 files and save it in a floppy or something.. 'pqbw.rtc' and 'pqbw.exe'
-
-
Boot your PC with partition magic rescue disks direct, delete every partitions on the disk.

then reset your bios to boot from CD, boot XP CD direct, create a new partition for about 15gb in size (leave the rest of the space unpartitioned), then format with FAT32, and do the installation, after windows is ready and running, do all the updates and activation (if needed)...,

then install the Norton Ghost and the Partition Magic.

create a new "primary" partition, this partition will use for your 2nd XP.

and create a logical drive using the rest of the extended partition space...
this partition will use for a tempo store the OS's image file made by Ghost...

let have the 1st XP build up and running, then using Ghost to backup an image of the XP partition and store it in the logical drive space.

then you can restore the image to the 2nd primary partition, and convert the file system to NTFS if you like.

but 1st pls have your 1st XP build up and check back..

actually you dont have to install the Partition Magic in Windows, you can do all the partitioning form the rescue disks.

i should have told you earlier than this, i can save your time even more by trying to keep the D:\ and The E:\ partitions, but i guess i liked you to have a good backup of all the files in those two partitions. if you happen to drop by and see this then let me know..

and if in the case of you cannot boot after the installation then make sure that the system partition is 'active', boot your PC with the rescue disks and you can set or see the info.

and how big of the 1st XP's and the 2nd XP's partitions.. this's all upto you..

using Norton Ghost's Backup wizard to backup the XP partition to a ghost image file,

if you have a CD writer and like to store the image file on to CDs,
so you can use it in the future, then add the following ghost command-line switches
to divide the image into 690 MB segments...

-split=690

and burn the image file to CDs..
and use the Ghost Boot wizard to create a 'CD/DVD startup disk with ghost'
then you can use the disks to restore the image files whenever you need it.

once you have the image file, start the Ghost and open up the Restore wizard,
browse to the image file location and select the 2nd partition as the destination,
then the program will restart to DOS and and do the restore and return to Windows..

Windows detects a new partition and gives you a 'new hardware found' message,
and asked for a restart, click Cancel.

then go to Start -> Run and type in the following command and hit enter key.

diskmgmt.msc

in the Disk Management,
R-click on the 2nd partition, select 'Change Drive Letter..'
then 'Remove' the drive letter.
and Reboot your PC,
Reset you bios, and Boot with the Partition Magic rescue disks,
select 'Hide' the 2nd partition and make sure that the 1st partition is an 'Active',
then restart normal,

in Windows, run diskmgmt.msc' this time you should see the 2nd partition is listed as 'Unknown Partition'.

Then, create a new folder and put the 'pqbw.exe' and the 'pqbw.rtc' files into the folder,
then rename it to anything you like (ie. PQBoot for Windows),
then create a shortcut anywhere you like, maybe on desktop or start menu,
and browse to the location of the folder and select the 'pqbw.exe' as the target of the shorcut.

Run the shortcut whenever you like to boot your 2nd XP.
you also need to have the 'PQBoot for Windows' files inside the 2nd XP partition.

Now, go ahead and post any questions or if you do find the prob.

Okay, create a new "primary" partition for OS installation and set the partition 'Active', and 'Hide' the 1st partition,

then boot XP CD direct and do another XP setup.
