Installing Windows XP

I heard something about installing Win XP...I want to see if there is any truth to this and/or opinions about doing such a thing.

What I heard is that Win XP can be installed without ACPI and will perform much better than with ACPI better. Is this true? Has anyone done this?

Thanks for any input

I've tried it.

It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. If you like to relive the Win95 days of pushing off the power button after you shutdown, you'll have it in a non-ACPI Win. XP. There's a lot more useful tweaks than getting rid of ACPI

Thanks for the input.

You would not have any links or tips to those tweaks to get the most out of your system would you?

TweakXP <-- Lots of tweaks in general
Kelly's Korner XP <-- Lots of Registry Based Tweaks
Black Viper's <-- Services Related Tweaks

3 Useful sites.

Be sure to do whatever back ups you need before applying tweaks.

Technically, MS would prefer ACPI be used. It takes away some decision making from the BIOS and leaves those up to the OS.
With a standard HAL, the BIOS can "surprise" the OS; i.e. there are things the BIOS can do that can throw a curve at the OS,
but the OS still has to honor the request regardless of whether it makes sense or not.

ACPI isn't just power management. It's a control protocol between the BIOS and the OS which incorporates the ability to control power to individual devices at the OS level. The biggest thing however is device enumeration/detection.
ACPI has no negative impact on the XP system's performance.
