HD space take up..what the *Frontsidebus*?!
hey, fsb replaces the F word heh- anyways- i partitioned my HD, an old 20gb maxtor...things are cool but my main drive with win xp, C:, has only 384MB/4.87GB left...now i checked the HD for ALL movies/sound/puictures - nothing, no files of such significant size.
i have no games installed under C: - i have Farcry only on my cpu, been playing it alot!! - and i got any media files or pics in my other 2 partitions E and F . they do not appear to have space taken up by phantom files..whats going on? i checked the size of windows and it is 1.24gb - and program files=325 mb...i ended up with 1459MB alltogether taken up , with some minor little pics here and there taking up a high of roughly 300kb...but i should have approx 3.4gb left.. PLS help- no games nothing big aside from windows on this HD- i also used cleandisk- but i have not defragmented this drive yet, ill do it hopefully it will help out , thanks- GAME ON |

check page filing size... check to see if Hibernation is turned on.... also System Restore.... in combination.. they can all take up to 2-3gb
BTW... i highly suggest that at a minimum...5gb for windows (5120mb for partitioning)....C: ) but i recommend 10gb partition (10240)

(during normal use.... including web pages).... games and other uses can bring the paging file all the way up to 800mb or more..... You might want to ask for this thread to be moved to the Windows Forum however... Tiro knows alot more about this.. .and were your space may be going due to what windows might be doing...

Ok if you want to save space and dont use the system restore turn it off that will get you a nice chunk of space back.
Go to the control panel>system>system restore tab>there should be a disable on all drives check box> hit that box and apply. Next open my computer and right click on the C:\ drive > then go to properties > and run disk cleanup. This will clear out all the restore files and other temp files in your system. |

Also check your size of the paging file. Go to the control panel and then go to system.... then advanced tab...then you should see performance with an advanced tab around it click it...then click on the virtual memory tab...that will give you your virtual memory information.

Excellent! i be noob
thanks Source, for the info saved brought me up to rouhgly 2.4gb increase woohoo, now i didnt turn it off, just set the restore point percent to 4, it said its aboutr 200mb reserved space for it, so thats fine- now this virtual memory, is it safe to lower it a bit, i mean does the paging file have to be large? right now it is 768MB- well i set it to 200MB with a max of 200mb, so hopwefully this doesnt mess things up =) thank the nanos for restor points!

Well if you start getting low virtual memory errors then i would start to increase it.

i would recommend you set the initial Virtual Memory size (min mem) to no lower then 64mb.... and set the max to say... 512mb (for a 256mb of ram system)...... or 256mb for a 512mb system.... and 128mb for a 1gb ram system.... (purely guideline esitmates)
Never set them to the same in XP.... 9x systems didn't mind it....
