just like the title says, this concerns the installation of drivers (let us say ATI drivers for the sake of argument). It is recommended that old drivers be uninstalled, then the machine rebooted. Then i'm supposed to cancel Windows finding drivers. However, upon rebooting, a little hardware wizard icon pops up in the taskbar and automatically finds drivers, i can't intervene in any way. is this normal? Running xp pro

try completely disconnecting from the internet. Unplug the nic or modem whichever you use and then see if you can't cancel out of the install process.

winxp automatically downloads drivers off the net without informing the user and then installs them
.... great feature huh? .... it prompts me to connect to the internet every time i uninstall my ati drivers ... Broadband peeps should unplug their modems before installing new drivers... gee thanx microsoft for the great feature

no but that's not exactly my problem. My problem is that XP automatically searches my hard disk for drivers, i need to get it to stop doing that! After rebooting my machine after uninstalling old ATI drivers, I don't want any old drivers just automatically installed, i want xp to prompt me before searching, like it does in safe mode

if its anything like the usb modem i have you need to go to the windows folder // set it to show all hidden files // look for the INF folder and delete the .inf file relating to whatever you are trying to install
if i leave the inf file on my pc ( dosnt get removed on a normal uninstall ) when i reinstall the modem it just searches and installs with no prompt |

I've never had that problem. Did you follow the uninstall guide in the driver forum? Clean out ATI from windows and registry too. maybe that will help.

All you have to do is delete the .inf file containing the model of your card.
