installing XP

Ok im trying to install xp on a 300Mhz AMD k6 with 512 ram and a 9500 pro...the problem is that after windows xp (i have tried this with 2003 also) copies all its files and goes to restart to install the OS i get a black screen. I have no idea whats up with it...any suggestions?

Maybe some jumpers are set wrong... I think what you said happened to my brother before and it was a jumper in the wrong place that was the problem.

if the board has onboard video try installing windows off that and then installing the radeon via windows 'new hardware isntallation wizard'

I tried this with a TNT2 AGP video card and also a trident pci video card....no go....i dont think windows 98 will work either...im pretty sure it will though..

during setup..
try using only one stick of RAM if there were more than one there...
try moving the machine to a new work surface...
and also try changing out the monitor if it's very old.

Moniter is a news moniter that works fine...windows 98 will install up to the restart and then when it need to start installing it just frezes on a black screen..this happans with 98-xp ... i can install 98 on another machine and then movie the hard drive over and it will finsh installing. I dont think i can do with xp can i?

well the setup copies all the files needed, but it cannot resume in GUI mode for some reason..
i'd try running setup again on this machine..., try loading bios default, disable bios virus protection and plug n play, also remove NIC and modem cards...

But if you have already tried that or you can't install it..
then read this article.. Moving a hard drive with XP installed to another computer.

Well what brand mobo is it? It probably needs Chipset drivers and AGP drivers and whatnot. Sounds like a display problem.

Ok sorry for the delay on new info...i finally got a windows 98 install it...but i cannot for the life of me get any newer OS on it. I can not get that XP hdd switch to work after the repair it restarts to a black screen ... i havent had the chance to look of ther black screen like you sent me...i guess i will just have to stick with 98 i as hopin to get XP on there without running visual styles.

Some older systems required a bios update to properly handle Windows XP/W2K.

You might try Windows ME and see if it takes…

Oh yeah, good point, bios updates are important in older systems when trying to install newer OS's.
