After installing the 1106 final, there is a 242 day "time bomb" regarding getting further XP updates. To check, after you've installed SP1, set your clock ahead 243 days and see if you are allowed updates.

I put my clock to 2003 and went to Windows Update, there were no updates available. When putting my clock back to 2002, I could get updates. So I guess this is some confirmation.
Edit: No more updates available starting day 243 |

Well if you set the clock back to 2001 it'll do the same thing.

this was posted over at winbeta by cold: " Well, before this gets all blown out of proportion, lets get this cleared up right away.
With XP SP1, in 242 days WU (Windows Update) v5 will come online. When you go to WU with a clock set that far ahead it checks V5 servers instead of V4. As the database is currently empty, it just won't do anything. So, in a nutshell, WU is simply disabled in 242 days because the WU servers have not updated to v5 yet. Nothing to worry about folks. Windowsupdate has, to my recollection, ALWAYS had a sanity check for calendar dates which affected the ability to retrieve updates - this has been going on since the days of Windows ME.
This isn't some phantom MS voodoo - it's simply making sure that values are where they need to be. It will allow for SOME difference in calendar opinion, and it's frankly surprising that it allows that much. And moving the calendar backwards provides a similar result as forwards. It's a sanity check. |

More scare tactics
Even so you still can manualy update http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp I had no problems with auto update after setting my clock 2003 Who uses that usless auto update anyway ,Manual update is better because you see what you realy need ,not just blind downloading of crap. |

Since installing build 1050 and continuing now with 1106, I get a menu box asking for username and password when I go to "tools" Windows Update... Anyone else get this?

I set my clock to 2004 & can get updates. I only have a few XP updates that I can download. Every since anybody has downloaded SP1, has there been any critical updates? I haven't seen any ever since installing SP1. The only updates I see, are a few XP ones & a few in the drivers section.

I just read something very interesting over at Warp2Search.
Here is a link to the article on Warp2. Warp2Search: Windows XP and Service Pack 1:Why The XP Keygen Won’t Help… For Long Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom and infinite pockets, keeps track of every single stinkin’ Product Key, Product ID, Product Code, CD Key, Licensing Key, Volume Licensing Key, etc etc etc ad nauseum. What does this mean to YOU? It means that, for the time being, if you have used the popular “XP Key Recoverer and Discoverer 5.12” that’s out floating around on the Internet to generate a CD Key to activate/register your copy of XP (Home, Pro or Corp) you’ll be SOL (read: Sh_t Outta Luck) in a short period of time. “But why oh why?” you ask. Read on and you’ll hopefully understand. Click here to read more from the direct source. |

Well, I for one think this is nothing to worry about. As I found out recently, Windows Update won't work if your system clock is set to far from the actual time. The way I found this out is because I recently had to reset the bios on one of my computers, after I reset the bios I forgot to set the time to the correct time. At first when I went to Windows Update, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. Then I realized that my system clock was still set to 01/01/2000. Once I set it to the correct time (and date), Windows Update worked fine.
If there is a newer version of Windows Update coming out soon, then all that will happen when it is introduced is you will get another warning dialog box telling you "that Microsoft wants to download something to your computer and that they certify that it is safe." (I forget what they are called, but you should know what I mean... )DAS |
