Default Post WinXP SP1 questions

After downloading SP1, I wanted a fresh install of WinXP with it, but I was reluctant to format my drive and lose all of my stuff. So I created a new small partition labeled as the F driver and put WinXP on it, so now I have two versions of WinXP. So my first question is can I transfer my settings, such as my desktop, to the new version of XP? Also, would it be possible to uninstall the old version from the C drive, and transfer the new one from F to C?

1. You can transfer your settings; remember the neat little wizard XP has built in.

2. You can format the other partition.

3. I don't think you can change the drive letter of the partition/HD that the OS is on. It doesn't work when I have tried.

4. If was you I would backup; wipe the drive and reinstall.

First off, after installing WinXP again, I now have an option after the initial boot process to pick which one to go to. I had to edit the boot.ini file to know which one is which. Also, now that I have my fresh copy of WinXP, I don't want to format my C drive because I have roughly 30 gigs of stuff I don't want to delete, which is why I was asking if it was possible to delete WinXP off of a certain partition, which I guess I can't.

below will be your C: drive
Boot Volume
The volume that contains the Windows operating system and its support files. The boot volume can be, but does not have to be, the same as the system volume.

here's F: drive
System Volume
The volume that contains the hardware-specific files that are needed to load Windows on x86-based computers with a basic input/output system (BIOS). The system volume can be, but does not have to be, the same volume as the boot volume.

i think i can help you whatever you want but let think about it again!
if you can backup what you needed then do as No.4 will be the best.
let me know

;
edit/
we can move some files from C: to F:
then remove old XP.. but the HDD will look funny that way

i dont really know i never got 2 xp.
can you see C: and use that partition from F:?

and for your quoted above..
he says that he got about 30gb.. in C: and i'm sure its at 1st partition
so what you'r saying that.. to keep 30gb. for datas then using XP after that.

and datas in its shud include Programs, datas, others stuff and then you want to move
windows from F: ??

i just dont know.. somebody help me here what's the right/best way to do all this.

;
edit/add
come to think of that again..
you can install winXP to the C: again but this time use directory as "winnt" (or whatever)..
then we can change "winnt" to "windows" but this will go to all registry stuff and if you upto it we will do that.............. then completely remove F:
oh well that will be fun

Thanks uf4! Installing to a different folder did the trick. I installed into the WinXP folder on my C driver, then transfered my files and settings using the WinXP CD, and had to reinstall a few programs. After that, I deleted the Windows folder and all is running well. Thanks again for the help!

you r welcome. very glad to hear that.. and one more thing i like to add to that is
(you may want to try).. its time to use a good registry cleaner program on your system..
MS Regclean shud do the job or RegHealer 3.4 is better but not free.

note use it only you'r sure about it and you shud set xp restore point b4 you do.
