OR
You can get rid of the entire security center by killing off the service in Services.msc

Well if every nobrainer turns it of because he thinks it is hogging his system or annoying ,
then the whole MS effort becomes rather useless, I'll tell you what is a system hog: 5 spyware programs & several trojans on your rig is a sure hog!! So i'll keep saying Do not turn it off if you don't have a Firewall learn to live with it, it is better than having no protection at all.. |

I do agree that it helps and if you have no clue what you're doing, that you should keep it on. Especially if you continue to use IE! P.S - Let's keep this civil, please. No need to lash out at each other.

To Clear things up, my post was not direct adressed @ Mr. Cox but more a general complaint to every one who is refusing to put any protection on his computer because Spyware & Trojans (or even acting as a mail(spam)server) doesn't bother him, and AV & Firewall are annoying, or don't care less what happens with it, just throw on a new OS, and all is well again.
I beliefe this is a wrong attitude, and every one with an overheated router or firewall must agree IMM, every second I get bombarded with trojans and other intruder behaivior.. Think of your computer as a house in a street, any unwanted indiviual must stay out no?, that is why you buy locks and intruder alarms, if not your neighbor is getting raided too by criminals and he will call the police, and marks you as an antisocial for not protecting your house and bringing down the neighborhood But being connected to the net is not like a neighborhood, but the risk being much bigger for you'r connected to the whole world, but you still have an obligation to your neighbors!! So please do your duty and leave on that free firewall & help make a better and saver internet please?? And it is easy to blame IE for being a leaking basket, but if every one had a firewall or at least AV that would not even be a problem, or not as big anyway, also firefox isn't completely save either.. Oh and Mr. Cox Quote:

the new Security Center and Windows Firewall are can be configured to suit your needs,
the Automatic Updates is now also can be configured, as a fully automated or partly manual and partly automated, it plans to meet everyone needs, and it all can also be turned off, altogether or just part of it. there're still many new computer/windows users out there who don't know or having a good understanding on how to protect themselves from hackers, computer viruses, etc., the default settings shuold be a good start for them... |

I wish people read all if not the original post before they opened there...s..leave it at that.
I made a technical question not a heated discussion of how many "live or want us to believe" they know.. It is quite interesting, that all these posts do not adressor come up with any meaningful suggestion to my question-It is really a shame. All Iam seing is how aggressive people seem to be in one way or the other. My suggestion, if one cant adress what is requested in a particular post, then one is free not to respond to it. I want to read something meaningful not trash. Thank you very much |

Turn off Security Center in services.msc. Simple as that.

erm cox, kind of defeats the entire full purpose of a thread if it's closed or deleted because the Source question was answered.
Questions will rise in every thread..... adds more purpose.... more to learn....

is the firewall in the new sp2 any good?
eventho this might be abit too soon to answer.. since the Windows Firewall just came out, but i'd say, yes, it is. it's alot better than the old XP's built-in ICF, and if we're talking about the FW only, not include the other add-on that comes with ZAP and other 3rd party software FW, then it is quite good or could be better than some of the 3rd party ones. should i uninstall zone alarm or run both? i think, running more than one software FWs simultaneously is generally unnecessary, and can cause conflicts, possibly negating the protection of both. altho there were many people that reported no problems using the old ICF in conjunction with other 3rd party FWs. but for this new Windows Firewall, again its too soon to know if there's any real issue.. i'm currently running Outpost Firewall becos i like its log viewer, program controls and i've the built-in one turned off. sorry if those are not an direct answers to your Qs, and before you can get a better answers, you might want to read some of a good info about these... 1) Understanding Windows Firewall http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...fsettings.mspx Windows Firewall now has three settings: On, On with no exceptions, and Off. Off: This setting turns Windows Firewall off. When you choose this setting, your computer is much more vulnerable to harm from unknown intruders or viruses from the Internet. This setting should only be used by advanced users for computer administration purposes, or if your computer is protected by another firewall. 2) Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. Part 2: Network Protection Technologies. read the section "Windows Firewall" and see if you think it's good enough for your needs. - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2netwk.mspx |

in the subj of the security center icon that you see on the notification area...
"Firewall" in Control Panel -> Windows Firewall's general settings i've set to "Off (not recommended)", and for the recommendation dialog i've checked the option for "I have a firewall solution that i'll monitor myself", this becos i'm using other FW product. with these setting will leave me an option to turn it on/off by myself at any time since i've configured the "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" service to Automatic, and to start the Security Center manually. "Automatic Updates" in Control Panel -> Automatic Updates's settings. i'm currently use the option of "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them", the reason for using this option becos i'm on a slow connection and i also like to see if this will suit my needs actually. this is a partly automated and partly manual. if this does not works like i wanted then i'll use a fully manual as i normally did in the SP1. at this point the Automatic Updates service will need to be on Automatic startup type. "Virus Protection" i'm curently using the AV that has been detected and recognized by the XP SP2 and its Security Center so the Alert Settings can be set to either to monitor (alert me option is checked) or not moniterd, does not matter becos this section will still show "On" (meanings like i mentioned, also means the softwere that i use is generally approved by this version of the XP) with all the above setting i'll not have to see the security center icon on the notification area. (as see on the pic).
