XP Home + SP2 Final = 2 Problems
I'm not actually 100% sure that these new problems are related specifically to the latest final SP2 installation. But, these appear to only have developed since I installed the final version and I've been using the Betas since last summer.
Here goes: 1. It seems that Windows is now stingier than ever with my RAM and resources. I'm having to reboot several times each session just to restore resources enough to do some video editing. I'm noticing that the system is now pretty much using 3/5 -> 3/4 of my 512 MB RAM after being on for a short while. And it doesn't appear to be releasing any of it when I close programs. 2. When I insert a CD into my CDRW drive, it spins for a little bit and then the computer restarts. I'm almost certain that this is related to Problem #1 in some way, but can't prove it. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing any of this OR does anyone have a suggestion as to where to start looking. I have a 350 WATT PSU that was installed only 5 - 6 months ago. AGAIN, however, these problems only started after installing the final SP2....so that makes it suspect in my opinion. |

uncheck the "Automatically restart" on the System failure section. and see if you can get the error code and msg. these Qs are about No.1... how do you set your system pagefile and what's the setting? do you use any memory management program and/or any system/file utility ?? any new program/driver that you're currently use and they've never been used/installed before? and any tweak or registry hacks that has been applied after this SP2 installed? |

I'll make that change in the Startup and Recovery settings to see if anything pops up there. Also, I'm not using any memory manager. |

you dont need a clean XP install before applying SP2, unless you want to start over or try to get a new image file made..

I'm also having memory issues as you can see here:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showthre...814#post423814 Also, when my system comes under some load especially related to IDE and especially my optical drive everything pauses including mouse cursor and SOUND. My music skips and repeats until it's done panicing and sometimes the sound doesn't come back but media player keeps showing it playing. I can pause and play and it will come back then. This happens especially when ripping CDs through media player and the drive is spinning up. I just ripped 124CDs this weekend. What a pain. Anyway, I'm using the latest nvidia IDE drivers. Are you? That could be the problem.

" Windows will always try to find some use for all of RAM — even a trivial one. If nothing else it will retain code of programs in RAM after they exit, in case they are needed again. Anything left over will be used to cache further files — just in case they are needed. But these uses will be dropped instantly should some other use come along. Thus there should rarely be any significant amount of RAM ‘free’. That term is a misnomer — it ought to be ‘RAM for which Windows can currently find no possible use’. The adage is: ‘Free RAM is wasted RAM’. Programs that purport to ‘manage’ or ‘free up’ RAM are pandering to a delusion that only such ‘Free’ RAM is available for fresh uses. That is not true, and these programs often result in reduced performance and may result in run-away growth of the page file." http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

OK...I know this is a belated reply to this post. (Kind of lost track of it for awhile.)
Two things I've done that 'seem' to make things quite a bit better. 1. I reset that "Restart" button as mentioned above. 2. I added enough RAM to give me 1 GB. Now, almost anytime I check the Performance, I'm seeing around 700 MB available. |

I had some issues when upgrading from SP2 RC2 to the final SP2.
It seems theres loads of issues upgrading that arent present in a slipstreamed install. I don't have a CD burner where I am right now so I had to extract the contents of my XP CD and slipstream it into a folder on a partition and install from there. Took a little bit to get it all setup to do but it was well worth it. |
