oh haha, i forgot about this thread! oopsy!

it was happening after i installed sp2 on my last install...then i reformatted with a slipstreamed sp2 install...it still doesnt show who is running it. the only one it shows is "System Idle Process", with, of course, "System" next to it.

i dont think it is a virus or spyware, ill update both and scan right now...
i think it might be an error with sp2...but nobody else gets it...so it's really confusing.

question answering:
yes the column is there
no, there are no "user names" listed...it's blank

thanks for replying this... all win2Ks' and XPs that i used and been using have always shown all processes in the TM accurately and never seen these columns loose its information, so i'm interested in this issue. thsis is about system security.. now you and vampy have this.. pls check this and reply.. open CMD windows, at prompt type in..

tasklist /svc

and hit enter, then copy whatever info you have in that windows and post..

this'll make it easier.. run this in CMD windows, the command will also place a text file (tasklist.txt) on your desktop..

Tasklist /svc >"%userprofile%\desktop\tasklist.txt"

for more help and info of this command line utility, type tasklist /?

as for that pls check the "Terminal Services" is enabled and running, if it's not then Set the service Startup type to "Automatic", and reboot your PC and see if you get the User name back.

Terminal Services seems to be it. Perhaps it simply doesn't start as oftenly as before after updating to SP2, as if I remember correctly it is set to Manual both before and after SP2. Might in that case be that something else that polls Terminal Services to start more oftenly pre-SP2. I'd say turn off that User Name column and forget about it.

i also think the User Name column is okay after he found out what is the actual cause..

but some of the processes are missing under the Image Name column when he sure there must be some other processes running there.. this is no good and should not be... this also indicates suspicious of the integrity of the current Windows installed.

that didn't give me any useful info that might help me help you.
and you have not figured out the old problems that you said or atleast i thought that you have but to go to the next questions or problems.. but i guess you don't need a help and probably don't want to know since the windows is working fine.

and this is your new problem... don't you think that any ppls who can help you must have more information than that before they can help you.

no no, i wasnt really having a "problem", i just thought it was odd that it no longer showed the user names...but as you pointed out, the terminal service seems to be what was causing it. i have it disabled, so no worries.

as for the amount of running processes, again, its not a problem...more like just a comment i was making.

I'll be damned, so all the running processes are there, just the names under the User Name column are missing lol..

Ah yes, Terminal Services is the answer to that little question of the user names I had that disabled on my other partition, super-slim benching partition.

interesting, after everything gets settled in at startup (say 30 sec after entering Windows), I have 13 processes running

with these services running:

task manager shows 78 MB used..
beware though, that I may have stuff turned off that YOU would really need! research before turning stuff off
actually I can turn off a few more of those, as I don't currently need them
but this partition is getting scrapped soon anyway.
that's just my "default" list, 98% chance I don't need anything else

as for the original problem, I still haven't found a fix, but still haven't read everything in a huge link Net gave me. I think it won't bother me too much after I get used to it.
