windows update fails to load
i just re-installed winXP and i went to the windows update site, and it d/led v5 for me. I had v4 on my old install, and it's all different now. I installed some of the updates, and went to reboot. After i rebooted, i went back to the windows update site, but it said it couldn't start because i had something in services turned off. told me to go to "services.msc" and set the BITS service to "automatic" and make sure it has started. Well, i did exactly that, and the windows update site still won't load, and gives me the error still.
i just want to back to the old windows update v4 .

V5 is default for SP2. You will also need to turn on the Automatic Updates service to auto.

well, this seemed to have worked. i'm not liking v5 at all. v4 was alot easier to use than v5. i like to have automatic updates disabled so i don't have it constantly bugging me telling me to update my computer w/worthless updates

In case you run a software firewall there is also the need to allow svchost.exe doing outbound tcp traffic (80,443) for v5 to work. Windows Update v5 has a nice interface, but to a tweaker it sure demands more of the otherwise useless things to be running.
![]() Edit: Those who are unfortunate enough to run into trouble when pairing SP2 with a Prescott CPU should be able to find a motherboard BIOS update that fixes it. Possibly an issue that only shows up when using early Prescott-capable motherboards with older BIOS'es. Last edited by mkk; Sep 7, 2004 at 02:05 AM. Reason: about that Prescott thingy |
