i'll get some idea after you answered these....

that error should occur when you trying to import a key?

how about exporting a key.... can you export a registry key ? if not, what's the error msg?

and before this ever happens.. when you want to " import " a registry key...
how you do it......... ? 1) double click on a .reg file to import it. or 2) R-click on the .reg file and select Merge.

ok maybe I mistyped..
the problem is that I have a *.reg file and i want to import it into the registry but I cant. Normally used to click on it and it went where i wanted it to. now I am asked what program to open the file.. that is my real problem.
How can I modify this to work like it used to?

Okay, so that the "Merge" (import registry into Windows's registry) is the default action.

go to Folder Options -> File Types, in Registered file types box, select REG and then check its Action for "edit" and "Merge",
see if any info you have do not look the same as you see in this pic..

write down whatever info you have then modify it and see if this helps...

--------------------------

if this explorer way does NOT help................. do not modify all the info back.........post back and i will work for a fix in your registry later

--------------------------

after i reread your initial post and all others,
i assumed that you do not have any problem with exporting a registry key..
but check it out and if there's an error when trying to export... you'll have to give me that details too..]

Open Registry Editor, select any small registry key , On the File menu, click Export, In File name, enter a name for the registry file.

Win 9x uses the header "REGEDIT4" the default export format is ASCII.

Win2K/XP registry file uses "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" as the first line. Win2K/XP registry is in unicode, so default export format is therefor also in unicode.
the Win2K/XP has no problem importing old ANSI registry files, only make sure the first line have the text "REGEDIT4"

Cox, why you ignore my question ?

anyway, you probably don't check any reg info of any .reg file before you importing into your Windows's registry.
if so, i suggest you check the information of any .reg file1st.

sorry Net, I didn't ignore your question- you must have misread the post made by The_Neon_Cowboy just at the bottom of it. I hope that was the answer to your question. If not then ,please let me know what you exactly wanted to know.

ok, i don't have time yesterday, but today i can so.... which part of your msges on this thread that indicates you gave me an direct and/or a complete answer to my questions and my requests for reesults... i did correct the infomation from your answer to the others.. considered that the ppls who are helping you might be your friends so don't give them hard times...
they don't have to type a very long msges just to answer a simple question on a very simple or common problems becos they will have to cover on many things, so that the solution thay gave won't cause any or more problems later,
either help them by giving them an direct answer and post your results... this'll help alot.
or don't just take only the good information and go, or think this thread is belong to you only.. others will get a good info off this thread too. or pls don't underestimated "whoever" that helping you by thinking you know more than them.. why asked?, for example.. and if you're not like that then it's okay, and don't mention it, i don't want to explain anything else, am too lazy to type this kind of things up..

if you don't like them to ask questions then give them the best informations that you can first and also make the correction to your own wrong info. remember you gave the wrong information and not complete on your initial post.

also i like to add that you see my last replied to you before you came back,
that msges was two parts, i asked you a question first, and i should have asked you this question in the past, not on this thread actually, but i have not done that. and then i gave you a suggestion, since you have this problem in registry and i've already known that your default action when click on a .reg file was 'merge' and not 'edit'. so that msges had nothing to do with neon posts.
