Well, you did pay for that XP copy with the Dell so if you would like to use it on a new PC you should have the right to I think. But I know on the dells you dont need to activate but they still give you the XP key. When I sold my bros dell I erased the HD and kept the cd and key(usually on the side panel). If you have this key you can use it on any rig.

Microsoft's EULA is very scrict. Technically if it was sold for use with his Dell then it can legally only be used on the Dell: one PC. Now if he wants to erase it off his Dell (and never use it again on the Dell) and use it on another non-Dell PC I don't know how legal that is but going by the EULA I doubt it.
(not to mention any additional restrictions place on that copy of the OS as it's not retail) Either way it probably won't work on another computer as the BIOS on the Dell might have a special DMI string that allows that particular copy of the Dell recovery cd ONLY on the Dell. I know from experience; a lot of computer manufacturers use DMI strings to limit certain software from working on other computers that are not theirs -- including recovery cds.

hypothectally speaking one could take a hard drive install XP it on it in the dell system then stick it in a diffrent pc, but you'd still have have to re activtate it
I'd have to have it to figure it out but I bet there is a way to pull it off look for the eula on the cd and read what it says ...

I have an OEM version of Windows XP, but it's an Alienware OEM.
(The serial number of the O/S is on a sticker on the inside door.) When I installed a new nForce 2 mobo on my PC, it was giving me problems, little warnings that I had to activate within such and such time. This is normal, but these warnings were popping up about every 10 seconds at one point. I finally tried to register it, and got a message saying to "please contact Microsoft at 1-800-blah blah, as this is more than the 5th time this software has been installed". Hehe...I was bordering on homicidal at this point... It was about 4am, I was tired of doing all the wiring, so I made the little call, got some geeky/nerd sounding guy. Soon as he opened his mouth, I told him, about the message, and that I had "installed this O/S more than 5 times, because your buggy ass POS software has totally crashed at least 8 times in the year I have had it. I paid for this software...I OWN this piece of crap. I got it when I bought my AW. Call 'em up ya *^%$#$!!! This is f***ing a** ridiculous having to call about a serial key I have already paid for! We clear?!!" The guy cleared his throat, and with great control slowly gave me some kind of new activation key which I typed in where the normal serial key went. Installed and registered like a charm. I have since re-installed the same O/S, using the old serial key and have had no problems. Dunno if that helps...probably not.

Hey I know how you can install it.
Basically the activation is on a chip on your Dell PC(we did the same thing with our HP POS computers) and so basically you take your Harddrive and put it on the Dell PC...install windows like normal...then put said harddrive in a different pc. THERE YAH GO! its done! (you may have to activate the copy ont he dell as well) The only problem is if it installs specialized dell drivers on the computer with the XP cd along with all the evil programs. I know with my bro's compaq, they gave him a CD with JUST windows XP OEM and then another CD with all the compaq "goodies" (aka computer rape) that are the extra programs like "FREE AOL FOR 40 DAYS!" yeah anyway. the OEM should be just XP and nothing else. try this out and I hope it helps!

Well I can't even TRY to install it on my normal PC... It just says some file is missing and crashes...
So I CAN try to do it on my Dell mobo and all but I mean, won't it clash? If it says some files are missing and they still not on my PC, it would maybe mess uo?

said files are on a chip on the dell PC. it moves over when you install it.
I dunno. it sounds exactly the same as what happened with out comps and what we did worked great. its worth a shot isnt it?

i can understand that perfectly, neon.
just got that info that i have post on this thread. and see if anything in there can be a useful info, that's all. there are two types of OEM CDs: 1) an OEM version created by a system manufacturer. these copies are usually "BIOS-locked", and can only be used on the exact machine they were created for. MS expanded and integrated the existing OEM CD BIOS locking mechanism with product activation, and call this method of protection 'System Locked Pre-installation' (SLP). SLP uses information stored in an OEM PC's BIOS to protect the installation from casual piracy. no communication by the end customer to MS is required and no hardware hash is created or necessary. At boot, XP compares the PC's BIOS to the SLP information. If it matches, no activation is required. every single piece of hardware could be changed on a PC with SLP and no reactivation would be required - even the motherboard could be replaced as long as the replacement motherboard was original equipment manufactured by the OEM and retained the proper BIOS. In the unlikely scenario that the BIOS information does not match, the PC would need to be activated within 30 days. 2) a "FULL OEM", or "FULL OEM DSP". these may be installed on any IBM-compatible machine. these may or may not be provided with a factory-built machine, but are usually purchased separately for installation on a home-built machine. OEMs may also activate Windows XP by contacting MS in the same way as activating a retail boxed version of Windows XP. but without that EULA info in my mind i'd say see if you can use that CD to install XP on another PC First, then talk to dell and/or MS or find a way or a reason to tell MS to activate your copy of XP after. or you can do another way around is cool too, i think the decision to violate the EULA is a personal choice, i think you can have/find the real info for your OEM CD easily, may be the one that you have can use on another PC, but how it can be done legally, i'd say find the right infomation from MS just to be sure . |
