Service pack 2

I know that this might be the ad nauseum latest thread about SP2, but I have talked to OEM folks and builders in the Mom and the Pops and they all have mixed emotions and opinions about it, what do you all think?

Two desktops and a laptop myself fine..Few clients with minor hiccups but not a single fatal issue that I've seen yet.

i've installed the SP2 on nearly every single one of the machines i've built along with half a dozen laptops/notebooks and various others..... i only have encounter problems when programs are running while installing (someone else installed it)... OR when services have been disabled without my knowing..

Frankly, i've had absalutely ZERO issues installing it through slipstream.... it's pretty well fool proof that way (no offence, just a saying)

Built 4 machines for others lately and SP2 has them running just fine. As for myself, I have had some issues with burning DVD's that I never had before, that being reading errors with Blanks, but I have managed to get around it.

I've heard about, read, and experienced first hand a myriad of problems with the initial "Final" release of SP2. I'm avoiding until
it becomes absolutely mandatory to have.

Main thing SP needs is a good working Computer...
And needs to be free of any Virus - Adware -sniffers -spyware and other cr@p..

If not; you'll bound to run in trouble.

So the best way would be a clean (slipstreamed) XP-SP2 install.
SP2 is IMM the best that MS has brewed in years, still not perfect but then who'd buy Longrun ..euh Longhorn

No real problems, but certainly a number of annoyances. (thus picking two poll choices) I didn't have any real need to install SP2 by any means, but after having fixed up a slipstreamed XP installation it's just easier to go with it. Reinstalling Windows a couple of times a year remains to be a good idea.

Unless a major issue comes up I won't apply service pack 2 for a long time. I don't feel the need to go around breaking anything w/a service pack I don't need. SP1, Sygate, and a good virus scanner are enough for me. Next time I format and the industry catches up to SP2 in general then I'll consider it.

I spoke to three of our local builders in town recently on my journey to find the ultimate cooling case mod, I found the consensus of opinion from the service standpoint is the casual user and problems with SP2 and non-microsoft programs, I asked Jon Bish, aka Wildchild and he echoed the same sentiments. If your experienced, you can get around the Nero patch problems and various patches and fixes to compliment the changes in the OS with the patch, but I also heard you absolutely cannot uninstall the SP without dire consequences. Again, the tech support folks are adamant about waiting till all the bugs are worked out in the product before they will install it on all their builds, some have gone so far as to print and handout disclaimers to customers if they download it, and have issues.

This is an opinionated topic. My 'base' profession is a computer technician and I've worked for different computer manufacturers so I can get around the problems, patching, etc. However I am a perfectionist; it takes me about 15 hours to setup my computer the way I want it from format to 'sit back and enjoy' so to speak so adding additional work on top of that for no reason is something I'm not prepared to do -- nor risking a format either.

SP2 doesn't add anything significant that I need right now besides incompatibility with various applications that I use. I'm not guaranteed any headaches by installing SP2 but the potential is there so I will wait a few months before making the upgrade and when I do it will be part of the next full format. Again, each to his own. Some people feel the need to have SP2 on their systems RIGHT NOW and if so then it's their choice. Hopefully they won't encounter any issues along the way that will cause them loss of data or just plain ol' inconvenience.
