have you tried "repairing" windows? i've done that a couple times on my sisters computer and it works great until she needs me to fix her computer again. "Repairing" all it does is pretty much delete all the windows files and reinstalls them w/o deleting any of your files.

you can use any win2k or winXP system and files to create the boot disk,
boot the PC with the disk and select the 1st OS/partition to boot.

thankx guyz for da replys!!!! ok so heres wot ive done so far...its come up with ntldr missing. did the boot disk and this is wot it said "invalid boot.ini file booting from c:\windows\"
then went to this "Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll please re-install a copy of the above file"
thats wot im up to now. Now the Xp cd, aparently the menu will come up saying a "clean" installation or "repair" installation. I've tried 2 copys of it and it doesnt say that i just wants to delete the partition to make space to install Xp again but i want to get my info off first.

Any more ideas would be great! Thankx again all i'll keep trying my end and doing different things.

if that was the error msg that you recieved when trying to boot from the boot floppy disk,
then try selecting the 2nd OS/partition to boot (the 2nd line of the menu choices)
i think all the files are there, and not missing nor corrupted,
sometimes the error msgs didn't mean what it says.
and you probably won't need to use the Recovery Console at all..
within the console you will have to run several command actions..
Bootcfg to manipulate the Boot.ini for boot configuration and recovery,
Fixmbr to repair the boot partition's master boot code,
Copy, copies all the said missing files to a target location,
and maybe more..

Ok ive tried bootcfg and it said there r errors. fixboot worked but i just relized that when i type dir in dos i only have 6mb left instead of about 70Gb so would i have lost the whole partition and have this little new one? i tried a win98 boot disk and it came up with the menu Windows XP pro or windows (default) i tried both of them but it kept coming up saying hal.dll is missing. but i cant copy that file into the windows directory as there is non. Plus it says access denied. I really want to get into it just to copy my info so hopefully it will b fixed.

what command actions did you used in the recovery console after you recieved the links to the MS KBs that i posted and before you got the error "ntldr is missing" ?

the XP boot floppy disk contains both boot.ini and ntldr files, it should helps booting your PC to windows XP installed on your HDD. and this at after you got the "ntldr is missing".

what you have done so far, in detales from the beginning ?

Ok wen i first got that msg unmounted boot volume i called up a computer place and he went through some of it with me until he said bring it in as we were stuck but i dont want to do that so i have been going to different forums reading up on other people who had the same thing happen but mine still doesn't work. he got me to go through the chkdsk and bootcfg and fixboot and they did not work as there was an error but we then tried fixing the boot.ini and the partition and that didnt work.
Then i went back on the net reading here and on other forums and copied ntldr ntdetect and boot.ini onto a disk and then it comes up saying hal.dll is missing.
I read that u can copy that to c:\windows\system32 folder but i cant as it says access denied. I cant do a repair install as that doesnt come up either it says i have 6mb free from my partition and i think its using that for wen im in dos. i havent done anything in win98 dos yet. I'm still reading up on things and getting replies back. It's really hard though trying to help people on the net instead of going to their house and fixing it there but its still really good! So yeah just have to get past the msg hal.dll is missing and then see how i go there. even if a can get into safe mode but cant get there yet.
