Cool! Is it normal for this many processes in Task Manager

Hiya,

Ive just updated my RAM from 512MB To 1GB 400DDR RAM and gameplay is much better.

But I was thinking if I had less processes in my task manager I would have more available RAM free for my games.

Ive got 46 processes running from start up, is this normal or is it too much?

And which ones can I end, usually If I just keep trying to end tasks eventually my computer goes into shutdown cause Ive ended a task I shouldnt and I have to wait for it to restart.

46 processes is a bit high, but it might be required due to your installed software and hardware config. If you're concerned about that many processes you can go throug your startup list (MSCONFIG) and services and disable what you don't need if you haven't done so already.

Also for those services that you DO need; yet don't need for gaming you can close them out before you do something that's resource intensive. I have about 33 processes running but before I play games I close out the onces that I don't need (some manually, most using a program called KillProcess) in order to free up resouces for the games.

Cool! Free space

If I close stuff through MSCONFIG when I restart the PC it generally tells me every time that MSCONFIG has been modified blah blah

that is correct...it will tell you that. just check the box that says "don't show this message when i boot up, don't enter msconfig" and click ok.

You do NOT want to disable services in msconfig. If you are using win2k or winxp, you want to go through the administration icon in the control panel and properly disabled them there.

Correct; I should have included that in my previous post.

use services.msc to do it...although you have to use msconfig to control startup items AFAIK

46 does seem high, even by this poll's standards, which I was already surprised at how many most people had running at startup

??? 46

Ok so what must I need running and what can I close?

I remember the old days when It was just 3 processes!

So do I just go to sysconfig and click disable all as this will re enable the ones it has to have? Just wondering about stuff like bluetooth, if they are switched off at startup will they all still load as normal?

Do NOT blindly disable all of anything. There could be stuff you really need.

Can you post a screenshot of your current list? Startup items, services, processes; any and all.

Check out this site for a handy utility for managing startup applications. I use this all the time and it's far more convenient than msconfig and faster than manually editing the registry. It will put an icon in your control panel to manage the standard startup applications without the clutter of services, etc

Personally I have 50 right now and thats on the "normal" side. Only once I get to 70 does my desktop really get cluttered.

No...I just use it to the max at all times. And luckily my hard drives, CPU, and ram is still alive. I also treat my PC good and don't overclock my machine AND expect it to run 24/7 for months on end.

At the same time my PC did just crash 3 times with a random restart. But I think thats associated with my ATI 9800 Pro AIW. O well shit will work out.

Use Hardware Profiles

To do this, I setup up a separate hardware profile and user account, using the Bare Bones info on Black Vipers site as a guide and the Startup Control Panel to move startup items. Then when I wanna game, I reboot to the "gaming" profile and Gaming user account and the computer loads with minimal services, streamlined for gaming!
