I'm guessing you are trying to install windows xp and using the f6 function?

what board are you using? some boards have multiple sata controllers. you need to make sure you are loading the correct ones. that exact situation happened to a buddy of mine with a MSI board. he mixed up which controller was which.

that board has 2 different sata controllers on it. are you sure you hooked up your drive to the right one? are you using the correct driver floppy? this is so deja vu for me.

there should be 2 different floppies, 1 for each sata controller.

what does it say on the floppy you have? via? promise?

you said you were using the bottom sata plugs. those are on the promise controller. when you boot the xp setup and run the f6 option, what does the computer say? if it says via, then you got the drives plugged in the wrong place.

You'll always need to F6 to load the controller driver to whichever controller you are using whether you're usingg raid or not, it's still really a raid controller and probably (pre sp2?) not native to WinXP.

Just load up both controller drivers to be sure - oh and have you enabled the controller in the bios?

just experienced the same problem

My bro-in-law drops off his computer parts for me to put together...at least I picked the parts.

The Windows XP SP1 install CD cannot detect the SATA drive...its properly configured, on the right SATA port (not RAID), SATA BOOTROM enabled in BIOS. Its on an Asus AV8 Deluxe board.

Apparently WinXP cannot detect SATA yet and I need to override the install via F6 and offer a driver DISKETTE. I haven't used 3 1/2" floppies in 3+ years.

I'm trying now to slipstream SP2 into my WinXP ISO and make my own bootable CD rom... hopefully SP2 additions will detect it. Otherwise i have to go and BUY a 3 1/2" drive... i have an old clunker that is pretty much dead.

I would have thought that SATA was a much more mature technology at this point. The fact that WinXP won't let me point to the Asus CD that the system came with is particularly galling...it requires a 3 1/2" drive.

sp2 won't detect it

however, you CAN slipstream SATA/RAID drivers if you can find the txtsetup information for them.

or just pick up a $5 floppy drive for nostalgia's sake

I'll try to slipstream the drivers another time. I picked up a Sony OEM 3 1/2" drive for $10 CAD from a ma'n'pa shop on Friday.

I first was near Best Buy, so popped in for a second...they had some generic branded "Sam-oshiba-ony" crap for...$50! I said no freaking way, and left. I was willing to pay for convenience, but not a 5-10x usuary mark-up.

That's why XP wont boot directly off of it, SATA is more MATURE than XP (In the sense of newer tech that is, not maturity !)

But hey, we all went thru this ourselves, If you are slipstreaming, then make sure that you included the SATA drivers in the slipstream, cause the SP2 will not help any bit whatsoever, except maybe for the odd controller here and there. Try out NLite if you want a simple to use slipstream app, it's nice and not too complicated.

Good luck and keep us posted.

PS : It might help to read up on the actual controller that you are using, and search about it on the web (Google for example), wether it be VIA's own controller or a Promise or Sil etc... You will probably find people with similar issues and experience and they will probably have asked the questions you are asking at the moment. Long story short, they will most likely name the actual file(s) that you need to slipstream or put on a floppy !
