Windows XP 64 Bit Edition??

I have been reading the blurb on the M$ webbie about Windows XP 64 Bit edition. They originally said they'd release it in 2003 (yeah right!) and still there doesn't seem to be any hint of it appearing for purchase. Also I seem to remember reading something about it not being widely avaiable to the puclic for general use? Is that right? Any ideas when we're liekly to see it?

I ask because I'm planning a new machine for Jan, next year and am planning on going 64bit and would like to purchase a shiny new 64bit copy of winxp if it's possible. It still seems that 64bit processors are faster on 32bit Windows so I guess my decision is still made but it would be nice. I see good reports about ATI's new 64 bit drivers too...

Anyone have any info?

Thanks

I have read somwhere that Microsoft is even going to replace your 32 bit Windows XP with 64 bit for AMD64. All for free. I'll try to find the link with more info when I get back home.

it is still in beta and I doubt it will be fully released by January. Don't let that be a deciding factor in purchasing an A64. Even if you get the OS, there's no guarantee you'll have all the 64-bit drivers for your hardware.

I just bought my athlon64 but I'm going to avoid the 64bit winxp until it's widely in use. I'd hate to run into compatibility issues. If you try it out now, I'd do it on another partition and purely just to "try it out".

well you know how when you try to run 16-bit apps(dos games) it emulates the 16-bit instructions?

same is true for win-XP 64-bit with 32-bit apps. Appearently the speed is awesome still(my friend has it, but hes running a geforce4MX so his idea of speed is a bit skewed) and it is more responsive...supposedly. Honestly I dont know as I've never used it.

It makes me wonder if M$ will even release a final version of WinXp 64Bit edition or just string everyone along and release 32bit and 64 bit versions of Longhorn....

well as it stands now, longhorn is basically going to be XP only prettier. They are taking out the main features that make it so great. Now they ARE going to put them back in 6 months to a year after release...but still :P

I did try Windows XP64 Bit beta version for a little while, did seem to run quite quickly but was very short on support for a lot of things like networking etc.

Won't be buying it until all the major bugs are ironed out, but thats like most versions of windows that have ever appeared.

In the last week, Micro$oft have confirmed that it will be available as an OEM product only. No retail versions.

Does this mean we'll not get our hands on it unless we buy it with a new PC? Or will we be able to buy it with new hardware (the all knowing OEM loophole)?

it means you can get distros from manufacturers. Buy your new asus mobo and it'll probably come with it at some point also(as long as its an A64 mobo)
