Question about a WinXP (upgrade) CD...
We're building a system for someone my bro works with. We told him to get a WinXP disk so we can start it up. He bought a WinXP Upgrade disk.....
My question is, do WinXP upgrade disks work like the old Win98 upgrade disks where it will just want to verify an older disk before continuing? Or will it force you to install 98 and then allow the upgrade to XP? (a route we DON'T want to go) Sorry if this sounds like a newbie question, but we've never bothered with WinXP upgrade disks before. Thanks, |

try doing a clean install from/using the upgrade CD, boot the XP CD direct, enter setup, when it asks where Windows is, replace the CD with win98/ME full "retail" CD for a verification.
this will not work with the win98/ME restore OEM CDs. |

AH! So it DOES pretty much work like old "upgrade" disks. This will solve the hangup on the OS issue.
Thanks for the info!

Another question, can you SP2 slipstream an upgrade CD ?
I can use a friend's system to do it on - it's actually their CD, used once and then the old system was put back to 98 (too feeble to run XP well). They say SP2 slipstreamed is more stable than an update install? |

slipstreaming a upgrade disk SHOULD work, since, as near as I can tell, these said 'upgrade disks' amount to a fullv ersion at a discounted price and merely require you having shelled out $$ for a version of windows fairly recently in order to get the discount. I'd try it for you and see, but unfortunately I don't actually have an upgrade disk...I just have the full OEM version of XP Pro.

What do you mean when you (and others) talk about slipstreaming? The only slipstream I am aware of is Slipstream 5000.

google slipstreaming
the 1st result you get from google should tell you about what we are talking about the "slipstreaming" here. and while you at google.com, pls also try "panda firewall" the 1st result you get would be at pandasecurity.com, and that will tell you about the Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0 is now with a firewall integrated. |

Ah, I see. Thank you. Slipstreaming sure sounds like a good idea in general. (Apart from the SP2 thingy :-p )
Though I do not use any Panda software (bad experience once), I am aware it is good. While the integrated firewall sounds good, I am usually against bigger software when I can do without. :-) That is one of the reasons I do not have installed say Norton or MCafee. On the other hand a friend of mine will not install such a program unless it is at least 20MBs in size lol. To each his/her own :-)

I slipstreamed one of my Xp home upgrade disks to sp1 last year. It worked just fine. I'd imagine there should be no problems with sp2 either, been meaning to try it soon. One nice benefit is that When I did a clean install with the slipstreamed version is that it no longer asked for a full older version like win98 for verification and installed just like the regular full version. I followed the instructions for slipstreaming Sp1 from The Elder Geek and he's done a guide for Sp2 here , I'll be checking it out later. Hope it helps.
