xp cd-key confusion
So, im fixing a friends laptop, it was showing a stop error at boot, last known didnt work, and the computer just rebooted if i tried safe mode. so i go to repair windows(xp pro) using my upgrade cd w/ sp2 slipstreamed. when it asks for a cd key, i type in the one thats stuck to the bottom of the laptop, but it wont accept it. would any one know a reason why it wouldnt work?

alot of OEM CDs cant be slipstreamed I've noticed. My brother's compaq came with an OEM copy of XP with its own special CD label and everything(interestingly enough it works in any computer even though it says it will only boot on a compaq). Anyway well when I slipstreamed SP2 onto it, the slipstreamed CD totally didnt accept the CD key. Try installing the original first and see if it accepts the CD key.

shadowfield,
i think the setup program on your disk will not accept the Oem product key (CD key). ------------------------------------------ Geminiwave Compaq has made many customised modules on the reinstallation CD and that may cause problem when trying to use it as a win XP SP2 slipstream source. but for ppls who has Dell's CD you can try to make a slipstreamed version of win XP with SP2, see this page http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...message.id=283 for more information, if you have problem when try to do it with any standard ways.
