Right Clicking on a CD to Explore Often Causes XP to Freeze

Ive had this problem recently where if I try to explore a CD by right clicking on it in "my computer" my whole PC locks up. I have to hit cntrl-alt-del and shut down my computer. It seems to happen more on burned CDs than official game/music CDs. I have also tried highlighting the CD and clicking on explore from the file menu and it still will lock up. Every once in a while exploring a folder on my HD will lock up, but most of the time it occurs when exploring a CD. I have read some things where people had similar problems if they did not highlight/leftclick on the folder/drive first, but I have tried that as well. Anyone have any ideas what to do?

Thanks

Kevin

if you are using SP2 then try one of these below, one thing at a time and see if it helps..
disabling your AV and others background programs,
disabling the Data Execution Prevention (DEP),
updating/reinstalling your video card drivers.

I see that when the CD in the drive is bad media..Too scratched, bad burn, etc. As for folders on the HD doing it.....Spyware/adware scan, virus scan? If that fails, a risky (might break windows updates?) thing to try is opening up a command prompt, putting your XP cdrom in the drive, and typing "sfc /scannow". That will replace any critical windows files that were altered or corrupted. GL.

How do I disable the DEP? I only see 2 options turn on for essential files, or turn on for all except ones that are specified. I did not see it listed in the services either. I dont think i have spyware or anything I rn that pretty often and I use McAfee virus scan w/ the firewall.

You need to edit boot.ini and make /noexecute=alwaysoff a part of the multi(0)disk(0) line.

a. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
b. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
c. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, click Edit.
d. Change the /noexecute option to the following:
/noexecute=alwaysoff
e. On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit.
f. Click OK two times.
6. Restart your computer.
