Icon - "safe removal of hardware"
Hey guys
I have a guy that has a strange problem that I'm not seen yet so I thought that I 'd hear with my favorite site. Every time he logs into windows, he has this icon on the right corner saying "safe removal of hardware" when he clicks at the icon his 2 SATA drives appears and if he then clicks on them it says "the activity could not be stopped" He don't want that icon to appear. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?? His specs are: http://www.maffia.dk/pics/index.php?bigimage=upload%2FHAP%2FNyaste+Datorn+To talt+inkl+Moms+20258.JPG

I don't know of a way to get rid of that, I wish I did.
The only think I could do is set it to Always Hide in the Notification Area customize settings. (right-click taskbar ... Properties ... under Notification Area, click Customize) moved to Windows

i think, that would be the only way to hide the icon from the system's notification area... and it's to use the Always hide option.
you might want to check this article out, it's about the Safe Removal of Plug and Play Devices in XP ( http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...h_dmt_cgwi.asp ), and see if the drives's policies seetings can be changed in anyway that can help the issue. |

That is a general thing with the Nvidia nforce3 chipset?
Just get the icon hidden, unfortunately that is the same icon that'll be used for card readers and other removable media devcies so it may work against you if you use that5 kind of thing. |

not sure about this, see if this will work in the case of other hardwares, click left/right chevron on your taskbar next to the notification area to hide/show hidden icons, so that you can use the safely remove hardware application.

Oops yep, my bad I didn't see you meant use the auto hide unused icons feature when I scanned your post, you're right of course, that'll work just dandy.
I appreciate the fact that sata was designed to be hot swap but do any of the desktop solutions actually support hot swapping? |

if you use it as a data/backup drive, not as a boot drive, SATA HDD hot plugging and removing it from a powered up system under win XP is possible, but you must disable the drive in Windows first, if the Safely Remove Hardware icon appears in the notification area, use the application. if it dose not appear there, you will need to disable the drive in the Device Manager. after performing one of the operation, you can remove it without risk of losing any data. you would need to check in the controllers's manual for more info of how the drive should be set up..

there is one icon, though, on my computer that doesn't want to stay hidden
I set it to Always Hide, then a couple days later, it's back to Hide When Inactive. grr....

what is the name of the program for that icon ?
try clearing up all of the pass items in system tray and set it all up again, and see. google "xp_pastitems.vbs" (created by Doug Knox & Kelly Theriot), run this script to clear all the pass items. |

It's a Network Connection icon. "A network cable is unplugged" you know the one.
It's for a virtual network adapter, TAP-Win32 Adapter

the adapter driver might be reinitialize or someting, eventho it's the same icon but that could cause a new instance, i think.
don't know how this can be resolved, if you don't want to see the icon you might want to disable the adapter when not using it, Run -> ncpa.cpl R-click the adapter icon-> Disable/Enable. |

Cheers Prodigal, might look into it further then, be nice if I could hot swap all me backups (which are getting a bit out of hand). Does anyone actually make a SATA caddy for the SOHO environment yet?
